چکیده

AMONG the numerous idiosyncrasies, both anatomical and biochemical, which distinguish the Tunicata so sharply from all other animals, few are more striking than the two features of their blood which were first revealed by Henze (1911)— the presence in it of an organic compound of vanadium, and also of very considerable quantities of free sulphuric acid. In spite of the publication, since that date, of numerous histological and a few chemical studies on the subject, our knowledge of the significance of these compounds, their range of occurrence within the group, and their relation to pigmentation and other properties of the animal, remains both scanty and confused. This work was undertaken primarily in order to investigate the chemistry, metabolism, and function of vanadium in the organism, but it has been found necessary, if any correlation was to be made between these results and those of earlier workers, to make in addition certain purely histological observations on ascidian blood. It may be confessed at the start that it has been found impossible to suggest any plausible explanation of the function of the vanadium compound, and that only a little progress has been made towards elucidating its chemical nature. The real purpose of this paper is to clear away a number of misconceptions that have gathered round the subject, and by a critical review, in the light of experiment and observation, of the findings of previous authors, to consolidate such information on the subject as is available.

Relationships Between Chemical Defense and Ecology in Benthic Ascidians

Thirty-five species of nearshore, benthic ascidians were collected in Bermuda and notes were made on their habitat, microhabitat, susceptibility to epizoic recruitment, morphology, and acidity. Twenty-four ascidian species were later analyzed for vanadium and iron contents. Ten species had vanadium concentrations of over 100 ppm d. W. (dry weight); three species had vanadium concentrations of o...

Chloride channel in vanadocytes of a vanadium-rich ascidian Ascidia sydneiensis samea.

Ascidians, so-called sea squirts, can accumulate high levels of vanadium in the vacuoles of signet ring cells, which are one type of ascidian blood cell and are also called vanadocytes. In addition to containing high concentrations of vanadium in the +3 oxidation state, the proton concentrations in vanadocyte vacuoles are extremely high. In order to elucidate the entire mechanism of the accumul...

The Effect of Oral Co-Administration of Zinc Sulfate and Vanadium on The Level of Blood Sugar in Streptozosin Induced Diabetic Rats

Background & Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting millions of people worldwide. Here, the effects of co-administration of zinc and vanadium sulfate on blood glucose levels in diabetic animals were studied. Notably, the study on the effects of the separation of zinc and vanadium has been done previously. Materials &methods: Moderate diabetic hype...

Vanadium-binding proteins (vanabins) from a vanadium-rich ascidian Ascidia sydneiensis samea.

Since the beginning of the last century, it has been known that ascidians accumulate high levels of a transition metal, vanadium, in their blood cells, although the mechanism for this curious biological function remains unknown. Recently, we identified three vanadium-binding proteins (vanabins), previously denoted as vanadium-associated proteins (VAPs) [Zool. Sci. 14 (1997) 37], from the cytopl...

Scanning x-ray microscopy of living and freeze-dried blood cells in two vanadium-rich ascidian species, Phallusia mammillata and Ascidia sydneiensis samea.

Some ascidians (sea squirts) accumulate the transitional metal vanadium in their blood cells at concentrations of up to 350 mM, about 10(7) times its concentration found in seawater. There are approximately 10 different types of blood cell in ascidians. The identity of the true vanadium-containing blood cell (vanadocyte) is controversial and little is known about the subcellular distribution of...
