Age and Fate of Saturn's Rings

چکیده
When Saturn was the only known ringed planet, the rings were believed to be as old as the solar system, some 4.5 billion years old in the conventional chronology. The existence of the rings to the present day was taken as evidence of this chronology. In the 1970s and 1980s, other planets were found to have shortlived, rapidly dissipating rings with life times of the order of millennia. Subsequently, the view of Saturn's rings' age began to change. They are now viewed conventionally as no more than hundreds of millions of years old, and a former prop of the conventional chronology has now vanished. Furthermore, an examination of ring observations and data unconstrained by conventional chronology indicates that the actual life time of Saturn's rings may be of the order of tens of thousands of years, and possibly less.

Weakly nonlinear model for oscillatory instability in Saturn's dense rings.
Viscous overstability (oscillatory instability) may play an important role in the formation of small scale structure in dense planetary rings such as Saturn's B ring. We investigate the growth and saturation of such modes in local particle simulations. Starting from a hydrodynamic model, we develop a set of ordinary differential equations to model the evolution of the amplitudes of the linearly...
متن کاملAN INDEX REPRESENTING STRUCTURE-CATABOLIC FATE RELATIONSHIPS OF AMINO ACIDS
Based on the Randic suggestion of the resolution of a structure into shape, size, and function an index representing structure-catabolic fate relationships of amino acids is constructed. The index obtained by multiplying three factors; (nb2 + nr), nc and M; representing shape, size and function respectively, where nb2 = number of double bonds, nr = number of rings, nc = number of carbon atoms, ...
متن کاملEdges of Saturn’s rings are fractal
The images recently sent by the Cassini spacecraft mission (on the NASA website http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/photos/halloffame/) show the complex and beautiful rings of Saturn. Over the past few decades, various conjectures were advanced that Saturn's rings are Cantor-like sets, although no convincing fractal analysis of actual images has ever appeared. Here we focus on four images sent by the Ca...
متن کاملNew dust belts of Uranus: one ring, two ring, red ring, blue ring.
We compared near-infrared observations of the recently discovered outer rings of Uranus with Hubble Space Telescope results. We find that the inner ring, R/2003 U 2, is red, whereas the outer ring, R/2003 U 1, is very blue. Blue is an unusual color for rings; Saturn's enigmatic E ring is the only other known example. By analogy to the E ring, R/2003 U 1 is probably produced by impacts into the ...
متن کاملSaturn's curiously corrugated C ring.
In August 2009 the Sun illuminated Saturn's rings from almost exactly edge-on, revealing a subtle corrugation that extends across the entire C ring. This corrugation's amplitude is 2 to 20 meters and its wavelength is 30 to 80 kilometers. Radial trends in the corrugation's wavelength indicate that this structure--like a similar corrugation previously identified in the D ring--results from diffe...
