Peer - to - Peer multimedia streaming monitoring system

چکیده
Nowadays, many companies provide on-demand or live multimedia content over the Internet. The success of the content provider is measured by the number of subscribers. There are, however, pirates that re-distribute obtained content illegally, thus cutting into the legitimate subscribers base. The content providers would like to know how serious the problem is in order to address it. The goal of our project is to develop a monitoring system to help the content provider to learn: what is the popularity of the pirated content, who is using the illegal service, and where are the illegal users? Our system focuses on services that are based on P2P streaming technology because its costeffectiveness and scalability advantages are appealing to pirates. We aim to develop a system that can monitor an arbitrary P2P streaming system. To achieve this goal we will address the following questions in our project: How to perform analysis to understand the audience? What measurement data can we collect? How to measure a high-dynamic P2P network? How to gather data from an arbitrary (and proprietary) P2P streaming application? In the end, we present a distributed monitoring system based on passive measurement. We conducted a set of evaluation experiments on three popular and representative P2P streaming systems: Acestream, Sopcast and Peerflix. The evaluation results proved the effectiveness of our measurement approach and strategy. Peer-to-Peer multimedia streaming monitoring system iii

Multimedia Streaming in Peer-to-Peer: Approaches and Challenges
Peer to Peer network make an application level overlay network on the top of physical network. It is a group of connected clients called peers. A significant part of the Internet traffic is generated by peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. Dynamic nature makes P2P challenging for media applications streaming although initially P2P networks were designed for file sharing. P2P could be a promising st...
متن کاملOpen Issues in P2P Multimedia Streaming
Peer to Peer networks (P2P) consist of a set of logically connected end-clients called peers, which form an application-level overlay network on top of the physical network. P2P solution facilitates contents/files sharing among Internet users in a fully distributed fashion. This paradigm is anticipated to resolve observed limitations in current centralized solution distribution and to significa...
متن کاملScalable multimedia streaming model in heterogeneous networks
In a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay network, a large number and various types of peers are cooperating by exchanging multimedia contents. Here, multimedia streaming is a key technology to realise multimedia applications. In multimedia streaming applications, multimedia contents are required to be efficiently delivered to processes in a real-time manner. Some contents peer may not send packets at a ...
متن کاملA Trust-Based Pollution Attack Prevention Scheme for Peer-to-Peer Multimedia Streaming Networks
Nowadays, peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming systems have become the most popular way to deliver multimedia content over the internet due to their low bandwidth requirement, high video streaming quality, and flexibility. However, P2P streaming systems are vulnerable to various attacks, especially pollution attacks, due to their distributed and dynamically changing infrastructure. In this paper, by ex...
متن کاملPeer-to-peer multimedia streaming and caching service
Reducing initial delay of playing time, delay jitter during playing time, and network bandwidth utilization is important for multimedia streaming service. In order to achieve these two goals, our peer-to-peer multimedia caching service exploits the proximity of set of clients and temporal and spatial locality of cached streams on the clients. Peer clients, which are fully connected together, no...
