Megaloblastic anaemia, cobalamin, and folate.

چکیده
Developments relating to cobalamin and folate are reviewed. Current work on the relations between these two coenzymes are discussed, particularly those that have emerged in studies using nitrous oxide, which inactivates cobalamin.

Megaloblastic anaemia in Chinese patients: a review of 52 cases.
A prospective study of Chinese patients with megaloblastic anaemia was conducted at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital from 1 May 1994 to 31 August 1997. Megaloblastic anaemia was diagnosed in 57 patients, 52 of whom were eligible for further evaluation. The median age of these 52 patients was 73.5 years and the male to female ratio was 1.08:1. The serum cobalamin level (median, 56 ng...

Cobalamin deficiency in the newborn usually results from cobalamin deficiency in the mother. Megaloblastic anaemia, pancytopenia and failure to thrive can be present, accompanied by neurological deficits if the diagnosis is delayed. Most cases of spina bifida and other neural tube defects result from maternal folate and/or cobalamin insufficiency in the periconceptual period. Polymorphisms in a...
متن کاملThe effect of folate analogues on the thymidine utilization by human and rat marrow cells and the effect on the deoxyuridine suppression test.
The deoxyuridine (dU) suppression test assesses the capacity of marrow cells or activated lymphocytes to convert exogenous dU into thymidine. In addition, the effect of the added cobalamin or folate on the result is used to determine the nature of the deficiency in megaloblastic marrows. This study shows that folates have a considerable effect on the uptake of labelled thymidine by marrows from...
متن کاملMegaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy: a clinical and laboratory study with particular reference to the total and labile serum folate levels.
It has been shown that the incidence of megaloblastic anaemia in a group of 463 randomly selected pregnant women receiving iron was 12 times as high as in a control group of 235 pregnant women receiving iron and folic acid. The incidence of all types of anaemia in the women receiving iron alone was more than three times the incidence in those having iron and folic acid. Some women who were not ...
متن کاملVitamin B12 deficiency presenting as pancytopenia in pregnancy: a case report.
Vitamin B12 deficiency is a well-known cause of megaloblastic anaemia and pancytopenia. However, the incidence in pregnancy is rarely reported. We present a case of a 32-year old multigravid woman who was diagnosed with megaloblastic anaemia since 22 weeks gestation and progressed to develop severe pancytopenia at 30 weeks gestation. She was also diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency related to...
