Interneurons Scratch an Itch
نویسندگان
چکیده
Itch is immensely frustrating. Most studies focus on the cause of itch. In this issue of Neuron, Kardon et al. (2014) find that itch can be modulated by inhibitory neurons that produce dynorphin, an endogenous agonist of κ-opioid receptors.

Spinal cord interneurons expressing the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor convey itch through VGLUT2-mediated signaling
Itch is a sensation that promotes the desire to scratch, which can be evoked by mechanical and chemical stimuli. In the spinal cord, neurons expressing the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) have been identified as specific mediators of itch. However, our understanding of the GRPR population in the spinal cord, and thus how these neurons exercise their functions, is limited. For this pur...

Recent studies have made significant progress in the knowledge of how itch sensation is processed, especially the molecular identity of neurons involved in itch signaling, both in the dorsal root ganglion and spinal cord. Despite these advances, the organization of these neurons in dorsal spinal cord circuits and how they interact with other somatosensory modalities, such as pain or temperature...
متن کاملItch and motivation to scratch: an investigation of the central and peripheral correlates of allergen- and histamine-induced itch in humans.
Intense itch and urge to scratch are the major symptoms of many chronic skin ailments, which are increasingly common. Vicious itch-scratch cycles are readily established and may diminish quality of life for those afflicted. We investigated peripheral and central processing of two types of itch sensation elicited by skin-prick tests of histamine and allergen solutions. Itch-related skin blood fl...

متن کاملCerebral representation of the relief of itch by scratching.
Cerebral processing of itch-scratching cycles was studied with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in healthy volunteers. The back of the hand was repetitively scratched in the absence and presence of itch induced by histamine applied close to the scratched site. Blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) effects were assessed in predefined cortical and subcortical brain regions of inter...
