چکیده

INTRODUCTION The aims of this study are to compare the binocular function following 7mm vs. standard (3.5 to 6.5mm) bilateral medial rectus recessions, and to determine whether timing of surgery or duration of misalignment prior to surgery impact on binocular function. Methods : Participants were 85 children with infantile esotropia: all had deviations of 50(Δ) or more and were followed for a minimum of four years. At a mean age of 7 years binocular function was assessed with the Randot(©)©Preschool stereo test, the Titmus(©) fly, and the Worth 4 dot test. Results : There were 37 children in the 7mm recession group and 48 in the standard recession group. There was no difference in binocular sensory outcome for either stereopsis (P = 0.3) or fusion between the two types of surgery. For all children the duration of misalignment prior to initial surgery (P < 0.01) and age at alignment (P = 0.04) were associated with stereopsis. Duration of alignment following first surgery, however, was not associated with stereopsis (P = 0.5). DISCUSSION In this study 7mm bilateral medial rectus recessions did not result in improved binocular sensory outcome compared to standard recessions. The most important factor associated with good binocular sensory outcome was a short duration of misalignment prior to surgery.

Early retreatment of infantile esotropia: comparison of reoperation and botulinum toxin.

AIM To compare the efficacy of reoperation and botulinum toxin injection in treating infantile esotropes early after unsatisfactory surgical alignment. METHODS 55 strabismic children who had been unsuccessfully operated for infantile esotropia were randomised to reoperation (28 patients) or botulinum toxin injection (27 patients). The motor outcomes (percentage of successful motor outcome and...

Infantile esotropia with nystagmus: a treatable cause of oscillatory head movements in children.

OBJECTIVE To document the resolution of oscillatory head movements following surgical realignment of the eyes in children with infantile esotropia and nystagmus. METHOD Retrospective review of 3 children who had infantile esotropia, nystagmus, and unexplained head shaking or head nodding. RESULTS Strabismus surgery restored ocular alignment and produced resolution of the head shaking in all...

Outcome of surgery in long-standing infantile esotropia with cross fixation.

BACKGROUND This is a retrospective study to determine the outcomes of the surgical correction in long-standing infantile esotropia with cross fixation. METHODS Medical charts of a group of patients with esotropia who had cross fixation and underwent surgery for strabismus between January 1991 and December 2004 were reviewed. The mean follow-up time was 4.7 years. Binocularity was measured by ...

Bimedial rectus muscle elongation versus bimedial rectus muscle recession for the surgical treatment of large-angle infantile esotropia

PURPOSE To compare bimedial rectus muscle recession (BMRR; 7-8 mm) and bimedial rectus muscle elongation (BMRE; 6.5-9 mm) for the surgical treatment of large-angle infantile esotropia (ET; ≥70 prism diopters [PD]). PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-four patients with large-angle infantile ET were divided into 2 groups; group A (n=12) underwent BMRR and group B (n=12) underwent BMRE. All patients re...
