Low-temperature C-S bond cleavage at low exposure ultimately results in nonselective decomposition to surface carbon and sulfur. At high coverage, the activation energy for decomposition becomes sufficiently high so that hydrocarbon formation competes effectively with nonselective decomposition. New insights into catalytic CO oxidation on Pt-group metals at elevated pressures

Producing a definitive picture of the CO oxidation reaction (CO + O2 ? CO2) on Pt-group metals (Rh, Pd, Pt, and Ru) across the ‘pressure gap’ has proved to be a challenging task. Surface-sensitive techniques amenable to high pressure environments (e.g. PM-IRAS) have sparked a renewed interest in this reaction under realistic pressures. Here, we review recent work in our laboratory examining CO ...

Carbon monoxide oxidation on bare and Pt-modified Ru(101̄0) and Ru(0001) single crystal electrodes

Carbon monoxide oxidation on bare and Pt-modified ruthenium surfaces with the (101̄0) and (0001) orientations was investigated with cyclic voltammetry, scanning-tunneling microscopy and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Facile oxidation kinetics of CO on Ru(101̄0) are observed, in contrast with a slow reaction on Ru(0001). Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements confirmed ...

Particle size dependent adsorption and reaction kinetics on reduced and partially oxidized Pd nanoparticles.

Combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), IR reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and molecular beam (MB) techniques, we have investigated particle size effects on a Pd/Fe(3)O(4) model catalyst. We focus on the particle size dependence of (i) CO adsorption, (ii) oxygen adsorption and (iii) Pd nanoparticle oxidation/reduction. The model system, which is based on Pd nanoparticles suppor...

CO adsorption and kinetics on well-characterized Pd films on Pt(111) in alkaline solutions

The electrochemistry of CO on a bare Pt(111) electrode as well as a Pt(111) electrode modified with pseudomorphic thin palladium films has been studied in alkaline solution by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. First Pd films were prepared and well characterized in UHV and subsequently transferred into the electrochemical cell for the registration of the voltammetric profi...

Analysing the Reaction Kinetics for Individual Catalytically Active Components: CO Oxidation on a Pd Powder Supported by Pt Foil

Spatiallyand component-resolved kinetic measurements and resulting phase diagrams for CO oxidation on a model catalyst consisting of Pd powder agglomerates supported by a polycrystalline Pt foil are reported. The kinetic data for the micrometer-sized Pt(100) and Pt(110) domains and for the different Pd powder agglomerates of similar dimensions were obtained by local analysis of PEEM video-seque...
