Variable Sodium Absorption in a Low-extinction Type Ia Supernova

چکیده
Recent observations have revealed that some Type Ia supernovae exhibit narrow, time-variable Na I D absorption features. The origin of the absorbing material is controversial, but it may suggest the presence of circumstellar gas in the progenitor system prior to the explosion, with significant implications for the nature of the supernova progenitors. We present the third detection of such variable absorption, based on six epochs of high-resolution spectroscopy of the Type Ia supernova SN 2007le from the Keck I telescope and the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. The data span a time frame of approximately three months, from 5 days before maximum light to 90 days after maximum. We find that one component of the Na I D absorption lines strengthened significantly with time, indicating a total column density increase of ∼ 2.5 × 10 cm. The data limit the typical timescale for the variability to be more than 2 days but less than 10 days. The changes appear to be most prominent after maximum light rather than at earlier times when the ultraviolet flux from the supernova peaks. As with SN 2006X, we detect no change in the Ca II H and K absorption lines over the same time period, rendering line-of-sight effects improbable and suggesting a circumstellar origin for the absorbing material. Unlike the previous two supernovae exhibiting variable absorption, SN 2007le is not highly reddened (EB−V = 0.27 mag), also pointing toward circumstellar rather than interstellar absorption. Photoionization calculations show that the data are consistent with a dense (10 cm) cloud or clouds of gas located ∼ 0.1 pc (3× 10 cm) from the explosion. These results broadly support the single-degenerate scenario previously proposed to explain the variable absorption, with mass loss from a nondegenerate companion star responsible for providing the circumstellar gas. We also present possible evidence for narrow Hα emission associated with the supernova, which will require deep imaging and spectroscopy at late times to confirm. A SECOND CASE OF VARIABLE Na I D LINES IN A HIGHLY-REDDENED TYPE Ia SUPERNOVA
Recent high-resolution spectra of the Type Ia SN 2006X have revealed the presence of time-variable and blueshifted Na ID features, interpreted by Patat et al. as originating in circumstellar material within the progenitor system. The variation seen in SN 2006X induces relatively large changes in the total Na ID equivalent width (∆EW ∼ 0.5 Å in just over two weeks), that would be detectable at l...
متن کاملConstraints on Circumstellar Material around the Type Ia Supernova 2007af1,2
Patat et al. recently inferred the existence of circumstellar material around a normal Type Ia supernova (SN) for the first time, finding time-variable Na I D absorption lines in the spectrum of SN 2006X. We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the bright SN Ia 2007af at three epochs and search for variability in any of the Na D absorption components. Over the time range from 4 d before to 2...
متن کاملDust around Type Ia supernovae
An explanation is given of the low value of Rλ ≡ Aλ/E(B − V ), the ratio of absolute to selective extinction deduced from Type Ia supernova observations. The idea involves scattering by dust clouds located in the circumstellar environment, or at the highest velocity shells of the supernova ejecta. The scattered light tends to reduce the effective Rλ in the optical, but has an opposite effect in...
متن کاملThe Type Ia Supernova 1997br in Eso576-g40
– 2 – Received ; accepted – 3 – ABSTRACT The peculiar type Ia supernova SN 1997br in ESO576-G40 was extensively observed at Beijing Astronomical Observatory (BAO) and Lick Observatory. In this paper, we present and discuss the BV RI photometry and the spectra collected over three months, starting from 9 days before maximum brightness. The light curves of SN 1997br are similar to those of SN 199...
متن کاملLuminosity Functions of Type Ia Supernovae and their Host Galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The sample of 137 low-redshift type Ia supernovae with 0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.3 obtained from the SDSS-II Supernova Survey for the southern equatorial stripe of 300 square degrees is used to derive the luminosity functions of type Ia supernovae and of their host galaxies in the gri passbands. We show that the luminosity function of type Ia supernova host galaxies matches well with that of galaxies in the...
