Learning latent block structure in weighted networks

چکیده
Community detection is an important task in network analysis, in which we aim to learn a network partition that groups together vertices with similar community-level connectivity patterns. By finding such groups of vertices with similar structural roles, we extract a compact representation of the network’s large-scale structure, which can facilitate its scientific interpretation and the prediction of unknown or future interactions. Popular approaches, including the stochastic block model, assume edges are unweighted, which limits their utility by discarding potentially useful information. We introduce the weighted stochastic block model (WSBM), which generalizes the stochastic block model to networks with edge weights drawn from any exponential family distribution. This model learns from both the presence and weight of edges, allowing it to discover structure that would otherwise be hidden when weights are discarded or thresholded. We describe a Bayesian variational algorithm for efficiently approximating this model’s posterior distribution over latent block structures. We then evaluate the WSBM’s performance on both edge-existence and edge-weight prediction tasks for a set of real-world weighted networks. In all cases, the WSBM performs as well or better than the best alternatives on these tasks. community detection, weighted relational data, block models, exponential family, variational Bayes.

Adapting the Stochastic Block Model to Edge-Weighted Networks
We generalize the stochastic block model to the important case in which edges are annotated with weights drawn from an exponential family distribution. This generalization introduces several technical difficulties for model estimation, which we solve using a Bayesian approach. We introduce a variational algorithm that efficiently approximates the model’s posterior distribution for dense graphs....
متن کاملWeighted Infinite Relational Model for Network Data
—As the availability and scope of social networks and relational datasets increase, learning latent structure in complex networks has become an important problem for pattern recognition. To contract compact and flexible representations for weighted networks, a Weighted Infinite Relational Model (WIRM) is proposed to learn from both the presence and weight of links in networks. As a Bayesian no...
متن کاملLearning latent structure in complex networks
Latent structure in complex networks, e.g., in the form of community structure, can help understand network dynamics, identify heterogeneities in network properties, and predict ‘missing’ links. While most community detection algorithms are based on optimizing heuristic clustering objectives such as the Modularity, it has recently been shown that latent structure in complex networks is learnabl...
متن کاملUsing an Evaluator Fixed Structure Learning Automata in Sampling of Social Networks
Social networks are streaming, diverse and include a wide range of edges so that continuously evolves over time and formed by the activities among users (such as tweets, emails, etc.), where each activity among its users, adds an edge to the network graph. Despite their popularities, the dynamicity and large size of most social networks make it difficult or impossible to study the entire networ...
متن کاملAn Introduction to Inference and Learning in Bayesian Networks
Bayesian networks (BNs) are modern tools for modeling phenomena in dynamic and static systems and are used in different subjects such as disease diagnosis, weather forecasting, decision making and clustering. A BN is a graphical-probabilistic model which represents causal relations among random variables and consists of a directed acyclic graph and a set of conditional probabilities. Structure...
