Particle motion simulation - a parallel distributed workstation application for real-time

چکیده
Particle motion simulation subdivides graphical objects into a set of small particles behaving according to specific rules. Real-time particle motion simulation makes it possible to simulate natural phenomena like smoke or Brownian motion for demonstration and verification purposes. The paper describes how the enormous computational requirements can be solved using distributed parallel computation on a set of workstations. 1 . Particle Motion Simulation Particle motion simulation is a concept applied in the areas of scientific visualization and computer graphics. It is an approach to model and render objects that cannot be easily described in terms of surfaces, volume primitives and motion paths. That is because the frontier between the objects and the environment is varying over time or can only be defined statistically, like fire, fog or smoke [1]. Particle motion simulation can also be applied to models in various sciences like the Brownian motion, economics and social behaviour. Particle motion simulation subdivides objects into a set of small particles which behave according to specific rules. These rules can be e.g. Newtonian mechanics, fluid dynamics and others. Particles can be created, can themselves create other particles, can change their behaviour during their lifetime and can die. There can be particle sources, particle drains and an environment modeled by conventional means. Particles can interact with each other and with the environment. The paths of particles can be used to construct higher level objects like trees or grass [2] for example. Real-time particle motion 1 This paper has been accepted for publication as: Sinkwitz R.C., Particle Motion Simulation A Parallel Distributed Workstation Application for Real-Time, Proceedings of the Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Workstation Systems, Elsevier Science Publishers B.V. Amsterdam, 1992 simulation represents a new method for studying and verifying models of different nature. However the computational requirements are generally enormous. An example of real-time computation on a "Connection Machine" is described in [3]. This paper describes an approach to distribute the computing process to a heterogeneous set of workstations.

In this paper the conservative Chandy-Misra parallel simulation algorithm is discussed. The basic algorithm is improved by using null message cancellation, simulation loop optimization and multicasting techniques. The algorithms are used for the simulation of a GSM mobile network application in a distributed workstation environment, Diworse. In the simulation results, special attention is paid ...
متن کاملA Parallel Discrete Event IP Network Emulator
Testing distributed applications over the Internet is fraught with problems: due to the inability to control a wide area network consistent, reproduceable performance experiments are not possible. Here a system is described that uses a parallel discrete event simulator that can act as a real-time network emulator. Real Internet Protocol (IP) traffic generated by application programs running on ...
متن کاملStatistical Methodology for WEB-Based Simulation
This paper describes a procedure for assigning simulation trials to a set of parallel processors for the purpose of conducting a simulation study, involving a complex simulation model, in near real time. Unlike distributed simulation, where a complex simulation model is decomposed and its parts run in a parallel environment, the parallel replications approach discussed here involves running sim...
متن کاملA harmony search-based approach for real-time volt & var control in distribution network by considering distributed generations units
In recent decade, development of telecommunications infrastructure has led to rapid exchange of data between the distribution network components and the control center in many developed countries. These changes, considering the numerous benefits of the Distributed Generators (DGs), have made more motivations for distribution companies to utilize these kinds of generators more than ever before. ...
متن کاملA real-time recursive dynamic model for vehicle driving simulators
This paper presents the Real-Time Recursive Dynamics (RTRD) model that is developed for driving simulators. The model could be implemented in the Driving Simulator. The RTRD can also be used for off-line high-speed dynamics analysis, compared with commercial multibody dynamics codes, to speed up mechanical design process. An overview of RTRD is presented in the paper. Basic models for specific ...
