Modeling Complex Physical Systems Using 2D Finite Element Cell-DEVS

We propose a method to analyze complex physical systems (like engineering systems or structures) using two-dimensional Cell-DEVS models. These problems are usually modeled as one or more Partial Differential Equations and solved through numerical methods, and our goal is to improve the definition of such problems by mapping them into the Cell-DEVS formalism. We used two methods for solving PDEs, and deduced the discrete event updating rules for their mapping to Cell-DEVS. In our simulation results, the accuracy of the Cell-DEVS solution was same of these previous methods, showing that we can use Cell-DEVS as a tool to solve systems of equations resulting from approximating the solution of PDEs. Simultaneously, we are provided with a simpler mechanism for model definition, automated parallelism, and faster execution.
