Anisotropic Materials Characterization Using Air-coupled Ultrasound
نویسنده
چکیده
Ultrasonic materials characterization is widely used to assess both properties and defects of structural components. Recently, the option of gasor air-coupled ultrasonic testing has become a realistic possibility. In this paper we develop the application of resonant sound transmission methods through ambient air in anisotropic materials with the sound wavevector oriented in a general direction in an anisotropic laminate. Establishing and demontrating the importance of valtage contributions from rays not contained in the incident plane, for sound propagation in a non-symmetry direction, is the major result of this paper.

Characterization of Aerospace Materials by Using Air-Coupled Guided Waves, Birefringent and Nonlinear Ultrasound
Ultrasonic methodologies of air-coupled guided waves, birefringent shear waves, and nonlinear ultrasound are presented and applied to the characterization of aerospace materials. The guided waves generated by air-coupled ultrasound provide non-contact monitoring of in-plane stiffness anisotropy and high-contrast imaging of defects in a single-sided access configuration. Mapping of local fibre o...

The results of NDE and material characterization with mode conversion of air-coupled ultrasound into plate and surface waves in solids are reported. Singleand both-sided configurations of efficient slanted wave conversion are developed and tested for various materials. An alternative option is based on the excitation of cylindrical plate and surface waves by a focused air-coupled beam incident ...
متن کاملNew Advances in Air-Coupled Ultrasonic NDT Using Acoustic Mode Conversion
Air-coupled ultrasound is a well-established tool for acoustic NDT and material characterization. Its major shortcoming is concerned with a weak penetration into material due to a severe impedance mismatch at the air-solid interface. A strong rise in acoustic coupling to solids is obtained by using acoustic mode conversion in slanted configurations. In our experiments, a substantial increase of...

Conventional air-coupled ultrasound (ACU) is a well-established tool for acoustic NDT and material characterization. Its major shortcoming is concerned with a week penetration into solid materials due to a severe impedance mismatch at the air-solid interface. A dramatic rise in acoustic coupling is obtained by using acoustic mode conversion into plate and surface waves in slanted configurations...
متن کاملInvestigation of Accurate Imaging of the Defects in Composite Materials Using Ultrasonic Air-coupled Technique
The modern aircrafts are built using various composite materials such as carbon/glass fibre reinforced plastics, GLARE and honeycombs. Manufacturing technologies of composite materials are complicated and include many stages. Small deviations from the technology parameters may cause relatively small defects, but influence of these defects on a total strength of a construction may be essential. ...
