A Simplified Model of Intrabeam Scattering
نویسنده
چکیده
Beginning with the general Bjorken-Mtingwa solution, we derive a simplified model of intrabeam scattering (IBS), one valid for high energy beams in normal storage rings; our result is similar, though more accurate than a model due to Raubenheimer. In addition, we show that a modified version of Piwinski’s IBS formulation (where η x,y/βx,y has been replaced by Hx,y) at high energies asymptotically approaches the same result. Theory of electron cooling using electron cooling as an intrabeam scattering process
Electron cooling that results when a bunch of electrons overlaps a bunch of ions , with both bunches moving at the same velocity, may be considered to be an intrabeam scattering process. The process is similar to the usual intrabeam scattering, where the ions scatter from each other and usually results in beam growth. An important difference is that in electron cooling the mass of the ion is di...
متن کاملIntrabeam scattering growth rates for a bi - gaussian distribution
This note finds results for the intrabeam scattering growth rates for a bi-gaussian distribution. The bi-gaussian distribution is interesting for studying the possibility of using electron cooling in RHIC. Experiments and computer studies indicate that in the presence of electron cooling, the beam distribution changes so that it developes a strong core and a long tail which is not described wel...
متن کاملM ay 2 00 4 A reformulation of intrabeam scattering theory
The motivation for the treatment of intrabeam scattering theory given in this paper was to find results which would be convenient for computing the intrabeam scattering growth rates for particle distributions which are more complicated than a simple gaussian. It was shown by A. Piwinski that beam growth rates due to intrabeam scattering can be expressed as a multidimensional integral [1]. It wa...
متن کاملIntrabeam Scattering Analysis of Atf Beam Data Taken in April 2000 * Intrabeam Scattering Analysis of Atf Beam Data Taken in April 2000
Our theoretical comparisons suggest that the ATF measurement results of April 2000 for energy spread, bunch length, and horizontal emittance vs. current, and a low current emittance ratio of about 1% are generally consistent with intrabeam scattering (IBS) theory, though the measured effects appear to be stronger than theory. In particular, the measured factor of 3 growth in vertical emittance ...
متن کاملIntrabeam Scattering Analysis of ATF Beam Measurements
At the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK intrabeam scattering (IBS) is a strong effect for an electron machine. It is an effect that couples all dimensions of the beam, and in April 2000, over a short period of time, all dimensions were measured as functions of current. In this report we derive a simple relation for the growth rates of emittances due to IBS. We apply the theories of Bjorke...
