چکیده
Hand washing is generally considered the most important p ro~dure in preventing nosocomial infections. The effectiveness of 5 disinfectants and unmedicated bar soap were studied for the removal of transient bacteria. Pevidine, chlorhexidine and cetrimide were found to be the most effective in removing both gram positive and gram negative transient bacteria. High bacterial reductions by soap and water reinforced the point that in the vast majority of situations in the hospital this procedure alone, i f properly carried out, is adequate.

A suspension of Staphylococcus aureus deposited on the skin was much more effectively removed by soap-and-water washing when it had been spread and allowed to dry (mean survival 2%) than when it had been rubbed on to the skin (mean survival 29.9%); when antiseptics (70% ethyl alcohol, Hibiscrub without added water) were used, there was no difference between their action against bacteria dried o...

In previous studies we compared the relative value of alternative methods for disinfecting the hands of nurses and surgeons and the skin of operation sites, but a number of relevant questions were not considered. For disinfection of the operation site alcoholic solutions of chlorhexidine (0.5%) and iodine (1%) were found to be equally effective and superior to a number of other agents (Lowbury,...
