Stiffening Method for “spring-back” Reflectors

چکیده
The recently proposed concept of spring back reflectors has revolutionised the field of deployable antenna structures. The whole structure is made as a single piece from composite material, without any expensive and potentially unreliable joints, and it is simply folded elastically about a central axis, like a taco shell. Shape distortions occur during manufacturing and are difficult to correct due to the low stiffness of the structure. A stiffening method is proposed, that consists of a narrow skirt connected to the edge of reflector, with up to four radial cuts. It is shown that this system can increase the stiffness of a 5 m dish by a factor of 20 and the fundamental natural frequency by a factor of 7.4. The increase in the maximum stress level during packaging is minimal and the mass of the reflector increases by 16%. Lin Tze Tan and Sergio Pellegrino

AIAA 2002-1498 Stiffness Design of Spring Back Reflectors
The recently developed Spring Back Reflector has low stiffness in the deployed configuration. A general method of stiffening this type of reflector without changing its folding properties is presented. The stiffening is achieved by adding a conical skirt around the edge of the dish; this skirt snaps elastically when the dish is folded. The paper concludes that it is possible to design spring ba...

متن کاملElectrophoretic deposited TiO(2) pigment-based back reflectors for thin film solar cells.
Highly reflective coatings with strong light scattering effect have many applications in optical components and optoelectronic devices. This work reports titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) pigment-based reflectors that have 2.5 times higher broadband diffuse reflection than commercially produced aluminum or silver based reflectors and result in efficiency enhancements of a single-junction amorphous Si s...

The incremental sheet metal forming (ISMF) process is a new and flexible method that is well suited for small batch production or prototyping. This paper studies the use of the finite element method in the incremental forming process of AA1050 sheets to investigate the influence of tool diameter, vertical step size, and friction coefficient on forming force, spring-back, and thickness distribut...
متن کاملMechanical Properties and Spring -Back Investigation in Creep Age Forming Process of 7075 Al Alloy
Creep age forming (CAF) process is a novel metal forming method with major benefits including improved mechanical properties and cost reduction for aviation industry applications. CAF happens due to creep phenomenon and stress-release during the artificial aging of heat-treatable aluminum alloys. In this work, the creep age forming of 7075 Aluminum alloy at 120, 150 and 180 °C for 6, 24 and 48...
