چکیده

Aims: A clinical in-market evaluation on 197 patients was carried out to assess the performance of the improved range of Allevyn hydrocellular foam dressings in clinical practice. The aim was to provide an insight into the uses and performance of the products in a clinical setting and on multiple indications. Methods: This evaluation took place in 13 centres across five European countries. Patients were entered into the evaluation after the decision to treat with the evaluation products was made. Patients were treated according to the product instructions and standard local practice. Data was collected at every dressing change until healing or until treatment with the evaluation products was discontinued. Results: Dressings were classed as satisfactory in terms of absorbency at 93% of dressing changes and were classed as acceptable for the indication treated for 96% of patients. For 92% of patients clinicians rated the dressings as satisfactory or exceeding expectations with regard to progress of the wound, and for 96% of patients regarding dressing durability. For 66% of patients clinicians stated that the evaluation dressings were improved in terms of absorbency in comparison with the previous range. Conclusions: The results of this study show that the improvements made to this foam dressing have translated into real clinical outcomes across a number of parameters, particularly in terms of clinician satisfaction. Conflict of interest: This study was carried out by Smith & Nephew as part of an in-market evaluation. Abstract

Evaluation of low-adherent antimicrobial dressings

Aims: To investigate the physical and antimicrobial properties of low-adherent, silver-containing gelling fibre and certain adhesive foam dressings in vitro. Methods: An in vitro model was used to quantitatively measure fibroblast adhesion to dressings in their dry and hydrated states. Microscopy techniques were used to visualise and quantify aspects of dressing composition and structure. Final...

Removal of adhesive wound dressing and its effects on the stratum corneum of the skin: comparison of eight different adhesive wound dressings.

In recent years, adhesive wound dressings have been increasingly applied postoperatively because of their ease of use as they can be kept in place without having to cut and apply surgical tapes and they can cover a wound securely. However, if a wound dressing strongly adheres to the wound, a large amount of stratum corneum is removed from the newly formed epithelium or healthy periwound skin. V...

Comparison of Allevyn Adhesive and Biatain Adhesive in the management of pressure ulcers.

OBJECTIVE The primary objective was to assess dressing delamination and the ensuing potential consequences during wear and/or removal, as well as the effect of residue remaining in the ulcer following foam breakdown. METHOD In this prospective multicentre study, 32 patients with a grade II or III pressure ulcer were randomised to receive either Allevyn Adhesive or Biatain Adhesive dressing. T...

A comparison of the in vitro moisture vapour transmission rate and in vivo fluid-handling capacity of six adhesive foam dressings to a newly reformulated adhesive foam dressing.

This study compared moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR) and wear time or fluid-handling capacities of six adhesive foam dressings to a reformulated control dressing. Standardised in vitro MVTR methodology and a previously published in vivo artificial wound model (AWM) were used. Mean inverted MVTR for the reformulated dressing was 12 750 g/m(2) /24 hours and was significantly higher than f...

Evaluating adhesive foam wound care dressings in clinical practice

In the current financial climate, tissue viability nurses must demonstrate that they can use resources effectively, while continuing to provide quality care and evidence that product selection decisions are based on the needs of the patient rather than the preference of the clinician (Department of Health [DH], 2010). One way that this can be achieved is by robustly reviewing wound care product...
