Judgement in Achieving Protection Against Radiation by Lauriston S. Taylor IONIZING RADIATION AS A TOXIC AGENT
نویسنده
چکیده
Ionizing radiation has been known to man for nearly eighty-five years and for only a few weeks less than that time it has been recognized that if people are exposed to enough ionizing radiation they may suffer injury of an obvious and definable nature. What is not known is whether there is some lower limit to the exposure below which man will not suffer injury and above which he will. There is nothing especially unusual about this state of affairs, except for one characteristic: compared with most other possibly injurious agents, ionizing radiation (referred to hereafter as radiation) has alw.iys been a part of our natural environment. Even though recognized as a part of the environment, there is no known way in which its presence can be completely eliminated or even significantly modified or counteracted. Man has always lived in a somewhat hostile environment. But the great difference between man and other animal life is that in most situations man has been able to learn to live with, to control, to modify, and, in some instances, to eliminate environmental hazards.

Study of radio protective effect of Thymus vulgaris essential oil against ionizing radiation on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs)
Introduction: Today ionizing radiation (IR) plays an important role in medicine, both in diagnostic and therapeutic field. Doctors, medical staff and patients are all in danger of side effects of IR so there is a need to protect them against deleterious effects of ionizing radiation. Thymus vulgaris has biological activities like antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Aim of...
متن کاملAssessment of the Radiation Attenuation Properties of Several Lead Free Composites by Monte Carlo Simulation
Background:In diagnostic radiology lead apron, are usually used to protect patients and radiology staff against ionizing radiation. Lead apron is a desirable shield due to high absorption and effective attenuation of x-ray photons in the diagnostic radiology range. Objective: Although lead aprons have good radiation protection properties, in recent years, researchers have been looking for altern...
متن کاملRadioprotective effect of thymol against salivary glands dysfunction induced by ionizing radiation in rats
The aim of this study was to investigate the radioprotective effect of thymol as a natural product against salivary glands dysfunction induced by ionizing radiation in rats. The rats were treated with thymol at dose of 50 mg/Kg before exposure to radiation at dose 15Gy. Salivary gland function was evaluated with radioisotope scintigraphy and then salivary gland to background counts ratio was ca...

متن کامل38th Lauriston S. Taylor lecture: on the shoulders of giants - radiation protection over 50 years.
Most advances in science, technology, and radiation protection are not truly new ideas but rather build upon a foundation of prior work and achievements by earlier generations of scientists and researchers. This paper summarizes major achievements over the last 50-70 y in the various areas involved in radiation protection as well as giving information about some of those who were, and are, sign...
