چکیده

I n recent years, the number of intelligent workstations in use throughout the world has grown at an ever-increasing rate. This fact is also true at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center, a major research facility of IBM. For many years, the Watson Research Center has been at the leading edge in the use of interactive computer systems (containing a very large computing facility and actually having more terminals than people). Recently, the population of terminals has shifted to greater and greater numbers of intelligent workstations, especially the IBM Personal Computer. The reasons for using workstations at the Research Center instead of terminals include increased productivity, easier personalization, and, especially in the research environment, the ease and low cost of attaching specialized equipment.

Developments in the Electron Gun Simulation Program , EGUN

Technological progress in the performance of small computers has rapidly changed the demands on the software that is properly matched to the hardware. Table 1 shows running times on some PC-clones and workstations for the electron optics program EGN2 (1) running a simulation of a gun for an Electron Beani Ion Source (EBIS) (2). The speed increases shown in Table 1 have been accompanied by a red...

Making Workstations a Friendly Environment for Batch Jobs

As time-sharing machines are replaced by powerful desktop computers and farms of workstations replace mainframes, more and more users turn to workstations when they need CPU cycles for their batch jobs. Unfortunately, they do not find workstations a very friendly environment for batch processing. Since these types of machines were originally designed as a single user environment, they lack most...

New Microprocessor Standards and Markets, Part I: Technology Assessment

Servers powered by multiple new high-performance microprocessors have nearly replaced minicomputers, and are threatening the mainframe market. Supercomputers are being attacked by these same micros, either to perform simple, scalar work or ganged together to perform massively parallel computations. The differences between workstations and personal computers are rapidly diminishing. Six similar ...

Fault - Tolerant Clusters of Workstations with Single System Image

he computing trend is moving from clustering highend mainframes to clustering desktop computers. This trend is triggered by the widespread use of PCs, workstations, Gigabit networks, and middleware support for clustering. This paper presents new approaches to achieving fault tolerance and single system image (SSI) in a workstation cluster. A multicomputer cluster is a collection of node compute...

Collaborative Work Approaches , Facilitated by Ubiquitous Computing , Will Shape Future Working Environments . Roomware Components Integrate Everyday

In the past, a central mainframe computer provided terminals for many users. In the current age of the personal desktop computer, there are one or more computers for each person. It’s only in rare cases that these computers work together to jointly provide functions. In the future, computational power will be ubiquitous. In such an environment, devices that support humans interacting with infor...
