Enzymatic Transesterification Coupled to Product Extraction in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide
نویسندگان
چکیده
A mixture of fatty acids ethyl esters (FAEE), rich in short chain fatty acids, was produced and extracted in a combined reaction – extraction system, integrated by the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). In this processing unit milk fat was partially converted to FAEE by enzymatic alcoholysis. Simultaneously, the lighter FAEE were extracted from the product mixture by flowing scCO2. The integrated unit, consisting of a stirred reactor and a separation vessel, was operated in semi-continuous mode, allowing continuous feed of ethanol and CO2. Process parameters such as the operation pressure and temperature and the molar ratio of reactants were investigated. The amount and composition of the FAEE extract obtained in the separator can be adjusted by manipulation of the mentioned process parameters. This design represents a novel and sustainable way to produce and isolate high value fatty acid derivatives from a natural source such as milk fat.

Properties of Biodiesel Produced by Enzymatic Transesterification of Lipids Extracted from Microalgae in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Medium
Abstract—Biodiesel, as an alternative renewable fuel, has been receiving increasing attention due to the limited supply of fossil fuels and the increasing need for energy. Microalgae are promising source for lipids, which can be converted to biodiesel. The biodiesel production from microalgae lipids using lipase catalyzed reaction in supercritical CO2 medium has several advantages over conventi...
متن کاملA Review of Enzymatic Transesterification of Microalgal Oil-Based Biodiesel Using Supercritical Technology
Biodiesel is considered a promising replacement to petroleum-derived diesel. Using oils extracted from agricultural crops competes with their use as food and cannot realistically satisfy the global demand of diesel-fuel requirements. On the other hand, microalgae, which have a much higher oil yield per hectare, compared to oil crops, appear to be a source that has the potential to completely re...
متن کاملEffect of supercritical carbon dioxide on the enzymatic production of biodiesel from waste animal fat using immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B variant
BACKGROUND Waste animal fat is a promising feedstock to replace vegetable oil that widely used in commercial biodiesel process, however the high content of free fatty acid in waste fat makes it unfeasible to be processed with commercial base-catalytic process. Enzymatic process is preferable to convert waste fat into biodiesel since enzyme can catalyze both esterification of free fatty acid and...
متن کاملOne-Pot Algal Biodiesel Production in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide
To advance the realization of algae as a feedstock for biodiesel, process technologies and closed-loop biomass use must be optimized. Life-cycle analysis (LCA) of the biodiesel production process highlights the potential significant impact of improvements in the extraction of algal lipids and conversion into biodiesel. Further, a single-step lipid extraction and transesterification process was ...
