چکیده

Neurobehaviorists predominantly use certain kinds of tasks in combination with distinct cortical lesions (9, 18). For the prefrontal cortex, the most commonly favored problems are the delayed-reaction-type tasks (13-15, 17, 18). One form or these tasks-the (spatial) delayed-alternation (DA) task-requires the animal to alternate between two spatially separated cues and/or responses, whereby a delay is interposed between trials or between the cue-access and the response period (3, 13, 17, 35). The performance of DA tasks by rats, cats, dogs and monkeys was consistently impaired, moderately to severely, after lesioning the prefron-tal cortex or its distinct parts (13, 17, 18). However, in spite of the uniformity of a DA performance deficit after prefrontal lesions, no generally valid and accepted explanation has been found. Hypotheses presented include an impaired short-term memory (lo), or-more specifically-a short-term memory deficit for the spatial dimension (30), Though there exists evidence of a possible subgrouping of behavioral symptoms and prefrontal subregions (18, 33), the above mentioned examples have also been related to only one particular subarea, namely the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of the monkey (18). However, as brain lesions not only include distinct changes with

Dissociative effects of selective lesions in the caudate nucleus of cats and rats.

Lesions in the neostriatal region connected to the prefrontal cortex severely impaired delayed alternation in both cats and rats, whereas no such effect was found after damage to other neostriatal regions. These results indicate that the processes mediating delayed alternation are well localized in the neostriatum of both cats and rats. Two possible models of neostriatal functioning are discuss...

Prefrontal cortical mechanisms underlying delayed alternation in mice.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been implicated in the maintenance of task-relevant information during goal-directed behavior. Using a combination of lesions, local inactivation, and optogenetics, we investigated the functional role of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in mice with a novel operant delayed alternation task. Task difficulty was manipulated by changing the duration of the delay ...

Prefrontal contributions to delayed spatial and object alternation: a positron emission tomography study.

Delayed alternation tasks are frequently used as probes of frontal lobe functioning. To clarify the neural substrates of delayed alternation performance in humans, the authors measured regional cerebral blood flow with H2(15)O positron emission tomography in healthy subjects as they performed delayed spatial and object alternation. Consistent with the monkey lesion literature, increased dorsola...

The behavior of chronic cats with lesions in the frontal association cortex.

Cats with lesions in the proreal and anterior sigmoid gyri and substantial but subtotal degeneration in the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus were studied for 6 years post-operatively. The control group consisted of normal cats matched for age and previous experience. The results reported here and in Warren's previous progress report indicate that frontal cortical lesions result in several behaviora...
