چکیده

The energetic thresholds for ion-pair photodissociation of diatomic oxygen fO2 1 hn ! O 1 OsP3y2, P1y2dg were measured using a novel technique. The technique depends on the production and selective detection of highly vibrationally excited ion-pair states which last for at least 5 ms following single photon excitation from the ground electronic state of O2. These ion-pair states are analogous to Rydberg states, and they may be dissociated by an electric field in a similar manner to the field ionization of high principal quantum number Rydberg states, allowing for their selective detection. Generation and characterization of highly vibrationally excited molecular beam.

A simple method to generate and characterize a pure highly vibrationally excited azulene molecular beam is demonstrated. Azulene molecules initially excited to the S4 state by 266-nm UV photons reach high vibrationally excited levels of the ground electronic state upon rapid internal conversion from the S4 electronically excited state. VUV laser beams at 157 and 118 nm, respectively, are used t...

Interaction of photons with molecules--cross-sections for photoabsorption, photoionization, and photodissociation.

A survey is given of recent progress in measurements of photoabsorption, photoionization, and photodissociation cross-sections of molecules in the wavelength range of photons in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), where the optical oscillator-strengths of most molecules are predominantly distributed. Some remarks are presented on molecules in the condensed phase. Particular emphasis is placed on the ...

Coherent optical detection of highly excited Rydberg states using electromagnetically induced transparency.

We demonstrate coherent optical detection of highly excited Rydberg states (up to n=124) using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), providing a direct nondestructive probe of Rydberg energy levels. We show that the EIT spectra allow direct optical detection of electric field transients in the gas phase, and we extend measurements of the fine structure splitting of the nd series up to...

Ultrafast structural dynamics in Rydberg excited N,N,N0,N0-tetramethylethylenediamine: conformation dependent electron lone pair interaction and charge delocalization†

Two nitrogen atoms and a flexible carbon skeleton make N,N,N0,N0-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) an important model system to study the interplay of conformeric motions and charge delocalization. Ionization of one of the nitrogen atoms generates a localized charge that may (partially) transfer to the other nitrogen. The structural motions, conformation dependent electron lone pair interactio...

The Stark effect in Rydberg states of a highly polar diatomic molecule: CaF.

The Stark effect in molecular Rydberg states is qualitatively different from the Stark effect in atomic Rydberg states because of the anisotropy of the ion core and the existence of rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom. These uniquely molecular features cause the electric-field-induced decoupling of the Rydberg electron from the body frame to proceed in several stages in a molecule. Be...
