Security and Authentication Concepts for UMTS/WLAN Convergence
نویسنده
چکیده
For a fast return of investment, network providers have to offer new services for the upcoming 3G mobile communication systems. Unfortunately 3G systems suffer by high installation costs and low quality of services in terms of high delays and low bandwidth. These drawbacks exclude many promising services such as real–time video conferences and multi– player gaming. Furthermore, high network installation costs inhibit quick growth and in turn slow down the recruiting of new customers. Therefore the convergence of 3G technologies with the beneficial wireless local area networks gained a lot of interest lately. Different architectures were introduced to combine these two technologies. The architectures differ in their security concepts. In this paper we give an overview of the discussed architectures and extend them by multi–hop capability in the WLAN network. Multi–hop will decrease the network installation costs furthermore and ease the installation of network components.

3G and WLAN Interworking Security: Current Status and Key
The third-generation (3G) mobile communication systems provide great coverage, complete subscriber management and nearly universal roaming. Nevertheless, 3G systems are subject to the low data rates (2Mbps highest for WCDMA). WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) provides hot spot coverage with high data rates (reaches 54Mbps while 802.11 a/g), but is subject to short range (reaches 100m the furth...

In this paper a heterogeneous network model based on the IMS-SIP (session Initiation protocol) with the help of Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) protocol that integrates the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technologies is proposed to improve QoS. The proposed Loos...

Interworking Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) and IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) introduce new challenges including the design of secured and fast handover protocols. Handover operations within and between networks must not compromise the security of the networks involved. In addition, handovers must be instantaneous to sustain the quality of service (QoS) of t...

The wireless communication with delivering variety of services to users is growing rapidly in recent years. The third generation of cellular networks (3G), and local wireless networks (WLAN) are the two widely used technologies in wireless networks. 3G networks have the capability of covering a vast area; while, WLAN networks provide higher transmission rates with less coverage. Since the two n...
