Distance Estimation in Minimal Virtual Environments

چکیده
This paper reports on an experimental study into distance estimation in a simple virtual environment. The results have been then compared with an experimental study of spatial cognition in the real world. It is concluded that the minimal virtual environment resembles a restricted Euclidean environment (or Euclidean environments viewed in a restricted or blinkered manner). 1. Spatial cognition and virtual environments This paper begins by addressing the question of how we navigate the virtual environments presented to us in non-immersive desktop virtual reality games. As very little research has addressed this specific question to date, it seems reasonable to assume that psychological research into real-world spatial cognition may offer a starting point for investigating virtual navigation. Much research in spatial cognition has focused on the concept of cognitive mapping, which can be operationally defined as the process or processes by which a cognitive representation of an environment is acquired. The process of cognitive mapping necessarily gives rise to a cognitive map, definitions of which vary greatly in nature. The notion of the cognitive map can be traced in the psychological literature as far back as Gulliver in 1908, but it is Tolman

Distance Estimation in Virtual Reality: The Effects of Overview Maps
Peoples’ perception of distance is inaccurate in both real and virtual environments; here, we focus on identifying ways in which these estimations can be improved in Virtual Reality. In this study, overview maps are investigated as an aid to distance estimation, used within the context of a virtual environment for the Sorbas region in S.E. Spain.

Companies and firms, nowadays, due to mounting competition and product diversity, seek to apply virtual cellular manufacturing systems to reduce production costs and improve quality of the products. In addition, as a result of rapid advancement of technology and the reduction of product life cycle, production systems have turned towards dynamic production environments. Dynamic cellular manufact...
متن کاملEstimating distances and traveled distances in virtual and real environments
Virtual environments (VEs) have gained widespread use in recent years as a tool for training new skills, particularly in cases where training in the real environment can be risky or dangerous. But while there are many potential applications that could benefit from using VEs, our understanding of several basic perceptual and cognitive tasks in VEs distance and traveled distance estimation, speed...

متن کاملInvestigations into Velocity and Distance Perception Based on Different Types of Moving Sound Sources with Respect to Auditory Virtual Environments
The characteristics of moving sound sources have strong implications on the listener’s distance perception and the estimation of velocity. Modifications of the typical sound emissions as they are currently occurring due to the tendency towards electromobility have an impact on the pedestrian’s safety in road traffic. Thus, investigations of the relevant cues for velocity and distance perception...
