چکیده
The arctic tundra is on the brink of significant changes and there are serious concerns among researchers and the public alike over the future of arctic biodiversity. The most serious threats are accelerating climate change and human impact. In addition to the scientific and economic importance of its unique biota, nutrient cycling in the Arctic has major National Herbarium of the Netherlands, Netherlands Centre for Biodiversity Naturalis, Leiden University, PO Box 9514, Einsteinweg 2, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands, Institute of Arctic Biology, PO Box 757000, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, AK 99775-7000, USA, Department of Molecular Phylogenetics, University of Kaiserslautern, PO Box 3049, 67653 Kaiserslautern, Germany, National Centre for Biosystematics, Natural History Museum, University of Oslo, PO Box 1172 Blindern, NO-0318 Oslo, Norway

Fungus-specific SSR markers in the Antarctic lichens Usnea antarctica and U. aurantiacoatra (Parmeliaceae, Ascomycota)1
PREMISE OF THE STUDY Usnea antarctica and U. aurantiacoatra (Parmeliaceae) are common lichens in the maritime Antarctic. These species share the same habitats on King George Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) and are distinguishable based on reproductive strategies. METHODS AND RESULTS We developed 23 fungus-specific simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers that cross-amplify between the...
متن کاملUnderstanding Phenotypical Character Evolution in Parmelioid Lichenized Fungi (Parmeliaceae, Ascomycota)
Parmelioid lichens form a species-rich group of predominantly foliose and fruticose lichenized fungi encompassing a broad range of morphological and chemical diversity. Using a multilocus approach, we reconstructed a phylogeny including 323 OTUs of parmelioid lichens and employed ancestral character reconstruction methods to understand the phenotypical evolution within this speciose group of li...
متن کاملBiogeography and Genetic Structure in Populations of a Widespread Lichen (Parmelina tiliacea, Parmeliaceae, Ascomycota)
The genetic diversity and population structure of the foliose lichenized fungus Parmelina tiliacea has been analyzed through its geographical range, including samples from Macaronesia (Canary Islands), the Mediterranean, and Eurosiberia. DNA sequences from the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer, the mitochondrial large subunit ribosomal RNA gene, and the translation elongation factor...
متن کاملGenetic structure of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri populations from chickpea in Ilam province, Iran
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important legume crops in Iran. Wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri, is the most important soil-borne disease of chickpea in the world. This disease caused high losses in different regions during recent years. Simple sequence repeat (SSR) were used to estimate genetic diversity in 114 of F. oxysporum isolates from six counties...
متن کاملLichens as biomonitors of air quality around a diamond mine, northwest territories, Canada.
Lichens are known to be bioaccumulators of atmospheric pollutants and are abundant in the Canadian arctic. Mining in this region may negatively impact the tundra communities and these impacts may be detected by increased accumulation of heavy metals, greenhouse gas constituents, and organic compounds in lichen tissue. The effect of sampling direction and distance from a diamond mine on bioaccum...
