Sznajd Model and Its Application to Politics
نویسنده
چکیده
Sznajd model of opinion formation in socities has found many applications, primarily in politics. Here, we review the basic model, show that its natural extension to two dimensions exhibits a phase transition, and then focus on its application to proportional elections where our model predicts the exponent for the power law distribution of number of votes obtained by different candidates in Brazilian proportional elections.

1 Election results and the Sznajd model on Barabasi network
The network of Barabasi and Albert, a preferential growth model where a new node is linked to the old ones with a probability proportional to their connectivity, is applied to Brazilian election results. The application of the Sznajd rule, that only agreeing pairs of people can convince their neighbours, gives a vote distribution in good agreement with reality.
متن کاملIrrelevance of information outflow in opinion dynamics models
The Sznajd model for opinion dynamics has attracted a large interest as a simple realization of the psychological principle of social validation. As its most salient feature, it has been claimed that the Sznajd model is qualitatively different from other ordering processes because it is the only one featuring outflow of information as opposed to inflow. We show that this claim is unfounded by p...
متن کاملLong-range interactions in Sznajd consensus model
Ising models have been studied since nearly one century, and simulated on computers since more than four decades. A new version is the Sznajd model [1] where again each lattice site carries a spin ±1. If two randomly selected neighbouring spins have the same value, they force their neighbours to accept this value; otherwise nothing is changed and a new pair is selected. In the Ochrombel simplif...
متن کاملMonte Carlo simulations of Sznajd models
The Sznajd model in less than a year has found several followers. An isolated person does not convince others; a group of people sharing the same opinions influences the neighbours much more easily. Thus on a square lattice, with variables +1 (Democrats) and –1 (Republicans) on every lattice site, a pair (or plaquette) of neighbours convinces its six (eight) nearest neighbours of its own opinio...
متن کاملHow to Convince Others ? Monte Carlo Simulations of the Sznajd Model
In the Sznajd model of 2000, a pair of neighbouring agents on a square lattice convinces its six neighbours of the pair opinion if and only if the two agents of the pair share the same opinion. It differs from other consensus models of sociophysics (Deffuant et al., Hegselmann and Krause) by having integer opinions like ±1 instead of continuous opinions. The basic results and the progress since...
