چکیده

Empyema is a collection of pus in the pleural space. Empyema caused by Capnocytophaga species is extremely rare, and after extensive review of the literature, we found only four reported cases of Capnocytophaga empyema. In our case report, we present a case of 71-year-old male with Capnocytophaga empyema initially presented with signs and symptoms of acute congestive heart failure (CHF), with no history of splenectomy or animal bite. The pleural fluid Cultures grew Capnocytophaga, no other organisms were identified and blood cultures were negative. People at increased risk of developing Capnocytophaga infections include post splenectomy patients, Diabetics, male sex, age over 50, and alcohol abuse. The risk factors for our case were age, male sex, congestive heart failure, and history of alcohol abuse. The patient was treated with chest tube drainage and appropriate antibiotics with complete resolution of his empyema.

Capnocytophaga sputigena empyema.

Empyema is a problem faced by clinicians worldwide. Most cases are caused by Gram-positive organisms, such as streptococci and staphylococci. Empyema caused by Capnocytophaga spp. is extremely uncommon (H. Bonatti et al., Clin. Microbiol. Infect. 9:380-387, 2003). We present a unique case of a polymicrobial empyema, with a predominance of Capnocytophaga sputigena, in an older patient with no hi...

Complete genome sequence of the dog commensal and human pathogen Capnocytophaga canimorsus strain 5.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a commensal Gram-negative bacterium, originally isolated from a dog's mouth, that causes septicemia in humans. C. canimorsus has the unusual ability to feed on host cells, including phagocytes. This capacity depends on surface-exposed glycan-foraging systems. Here we present the first complete genome sequence of a C. canimorsus strain (Cc5).

Inguinal lymphadenitis associated with Capnocytophaga bacilli.

Capnocytophaga organisms are capnophilic, gram-negative bacilli that have been associated with infections deriving from the flora of the oropharynx. We report a case of inguinal adenitis caused by Capnocytophaga species that probably represents sexual transmission of the pathogen.
