Dynamic Input Buffer Allocation (DIBA) for Fault Tolerant Ethernet Packet Switching

چکیده
In this paper, we describe a new fault-tolerant architecture to realize an ethernet layer-2 switch. This architecture includes a memory buffer scheduler to assign memory buffers dynamically to the input ports of the switch. To evaluate this architecture and produce throughput and latency projections, we have developed a switch simulator called NUSIM. This simulation environment has helped us identify performance bottlenecks and consider tradeoffs of various switch design parameters. Our results show that dynamic input buffer assignment can decrease the number of dropped packets by approximately 30% on average, while also providing for increased reliability. Our DIBA-Switch can tolerate N − 1 faulty input buffers in an N port switch. We have also found that throughput degrades linearly as a function of the number of faulty buffers, independent of workload.

Performance improvement of dynamic buffered ATM switch
Performance of ATM networks depends on switch performance and architecture. This paper presents a simulation study of a new dynamic allocation of input buffer space in ATM switching elements. The switching elements are composed of input and output buffers which are used to store received and forwarded cells, respectively. Efficient and fair use of buffer space in an ATM switch is essential to g...
متن کاملEfficient Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation for Epon
Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) has emerged as the solution of choice for the access network. In EPON, the data transfer channel is shared among users in the upstream direction. Therefore, it requires an arbitration method to allow ONUs to share the upstream bandwidth. There are many research papers on bandwidth arbitration schemes. Most of the Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) schemes...

متن کاملApplication Specific Buffer Allocation for Wormhole Routing Networks-on-Chip
A buffer allocation algorithm for wormhole routing networks-on-chip was proposed. When the total budget of the available buffering space is fixed, the proposed algorithm automatically assigns the buffer depth for each input channel, in different routers across the chip, according to the traffic characteristics of the target application. The simulation results show that the buffer allocation res...
