چکیده

We have shown that snoring fundamental frequency (F0) contours have an oscillating pattern in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as compared to the relatively smoother pattern in simple snorers. This points to the underlying upper airway instability and collapsibility in OSA. The 2 patterns were classified by 75% accuracy.

A Subject-Specific Acoustic Model of the Upper Airway for Snoring Sounds Generation

Monitoring variations in the upper airway narrowing during sleep is invasive and expensive. Since snoring sounds are generated by air turbulence and vibrations of the upper airway due to its narrowing; snoring sounds may be used as a non-invasive technique to assess upper airway narrowing. Our goal was to develop a subject-specific acoustic model of the upper airway to investigate the impacts o...

Increased upper airway collapsibility in children with obstructive sleep apnea during wakefulness.

Upper airway collapsibility (UAC) is increased in children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), but during wakefulness, active neural processes preserve upper airway patency, such that measurement of upper airway dynamics using acoustic pharyngometry may contribute to diagnostic accuracy in snoring children. Upper airway cross-sectional area obtained from acoustic pharyngometry measurements w...

Upper airway collapsibility in habitual snorers and sleep apneics: evaluation with drug-induced sleep endoscopy.

Increased upper airway collapsibility has been suspected of being involved in the pathogenesis of sleep-related diseases. It is assumed that patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) show a stronger collapse of the upper airway compared with habitual snorers. It was the objective of this study to analyze the patterns of upper airway collapse in habitual snorers and patients w...

Upper airway collapsibility, and contractile and metabolic characteristics of musculus uvulae.

Physiologic, metabolic, and histochemical characteristics of one upper airway (UA) dilator muscle (musculus uvulae; MU) differ between sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) and nonapneic snorers. We hypothesized that these differences in MU characteristics could result from the cumulative effects of the diurnal and nocturnal intermittent contractions of UA muscles in order to compensate for a pe...

Mechanisms of obstructive sleep apnea.

This article has reviewed the anatomic, compliance, reflex, and respiratory muscle variables that affect upper airway caliber and abnormalities which may precipitate upper airway collapse during sleep. One or more of these variables may be important in the mechanism of OSA in any given patient. First, anyone with anatomic narrowing of the upper airway is susceptible to OSA. However, we do know ...
