چکیده

The 6 January 1997 and 7 April 1997 halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were associated with interplanetary magnetic clouds observed by WIND that led to increased geomagnetic storm activity as indicated by the hourly Dst index. A recently developed storm-prediction method is retrospectively applied to these two solar wind (SW) structures. The results are described in detail. Had the algorithm been in place with real-time SW input, accurate predictions would have been made for both events.

The Automatic Predictability of Super Geomagnetic Storm from Halo CMEs Associated with Large Solar Flares

We investigate the relationship between magnetic structures of CME source regions and geomagnetic storms, in particular the super storms when the Dst index decreases below -200nT. By examining all full halo CMEs that erupted between 1996 and 2004, we selected 73 events associated with M and X-class solar flares, which have a clearly identifiable source region. By analyzing daily full disk MDI m...

The association of coronal mass ejections with their effects near the Earth

To this day, the prediction of space weather effects near the Earth suffers from a fundamental problem: The radial propagation speed of “halo” CMEs (i.e. CMEs pointed along the Sun-Earth-line that are known to be the main drivers of space weather disturbances) towards the Earth cannot be measured directly because of the unfavorable geometry. From inspecting many limb CMEs observed by the LASCO ...

Space Weather Application Using Projected Velocity Asymmetry of Halo CMEs

Halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) originating from regions close to the center of the Sun are likely to be responsible for severe geomagnetic storms. It is important to predict geo-effectiveness of HCMEs using observations when they are still near the Sun. Unfortunately, coronagraphic observations do not provide true speeds of CMEs due to the projection effects. In the present paper, we prese...

Characteristics of cosmic ray intensity on the onset of coronal mass ejections

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are large, energetic expulsions of mass and magnetic fields from the Sun; they can significantly affect large volumes of the heliosphere and appear to be a key cause of geomagnetic storms. The present study deals with the influence of Asymmetric 'Full' Halo CMEs, Partial Halo CMEs, Asymmetric and Complex 'Full' Halo CMEs and 'Full' Halo CMEs on cosmic ray intensity...

Prediction Space Weather Using an Asymmetric Cone Model for Halo CMEs

Halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) are responsible of the most severe geomagnetic storms. A prediction of their geoeffectiveness and travel time to Earth’s vicinity is crucial to forecast space weather. Unfortunately coronagraphic observations are subjected to projection effects and do not provide true characteristics of CMEs. Recently, Michalek (2006, Solar Phys., 237, 101) developed an asymm...
