Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head: Are Any Genes Involved?
Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) is a pathologic process that results from interruption of blood supply to the femur bone resulting in the death of bone cells and collapse of the femoral head. Nontraumatic ANFH continuesto be a significant challenge to orthopedic surgeons. While the exact mechanisms remain elusive, many new insights have emerged from research in the last decade tha...
متن کاملFemoral Head Avascular Necrosis in Heterozygous Sickle Haemoglobin, the Role of Parenteral Drug Abuse: A Case Report
Sickle cell trait is a benign haemoglobin disorder which rarely results in disease or complications. A few cases of osteonecrosis have been reported in the literature in parts of the world with advanced health care system. There are various predispositions to developing avascular necrosis in general, while the sickle beta globin gene inheritance is the most efficient factor. Injection drug abus...
متن کاملStage-related results in treatment of hip osteonecrosis with core-decompression and autologous mesenchymal stem cells.
Our aim is to analyse the clinical outcome of a series of patients affected by avascular necrosis of the femoral head and treated with core-decompression technique and autologous stromal cells of the bone marrow. We enrolled in our study 29 patients with 31 hips in total affected by avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The clinical and radiological outcome has been assessed through self-admin...
متن کاملCan three-phase skeletal scintigraphy predict the outcome and determine the timing of removal of bone distracters in avascular necrosis of femur using a novel corticostomy technique?
Introduction: 99mTc-Methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) three phase bone scintigraphy (TPS) is beneficial to evaluate the success of femoral head revascularization using novel distraction osteogenesis techniques with bone muscle pedicle grafts. This pilot study was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility and utility of 99mTc-MDP three phase bone ...
متن کاملAvascular necrosis of the femoral head in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a 4- to 9-year follow-up study.
Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is usually seen in children aged 1.5 to 10 years, reaching a peak incidence between the ages of 4 and 9. Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is a known complication of corticosteroid therapy in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. There are few reports in the literature regarding the natural history of this condition, and there is no consensus on its managemen...
