چکیده

This paper describes a method for profiling large systems software on a Linux platform. Based on runtime profiling results, the bottleneck source code gets analyzed statically, thus identifying the poor algorithms that caused the low performance. Employing of various tools used to profile the case study application leads to the conclusion of increasing importance for integrating code analysis with runtime collected data. The current status of existing tools on Linux platforms that support the methodology described is being summarized.

XIFER: A Software Diversity Tool Against Code-Reuse Attacks

The enormous growth of mobile devices and their app markets has raised many security and privacy concerns. Runtime attacks seem to be a major threat, in particular, codereuse attacks that do not require any external code injection (e.g., return-to-libc or return-oriented programming). We present, for the first time, a code transformation tool that completely mitigates code-reuse attacks by appl...

Bridging the Semantic Gap Through Static Code Analysis

The semantic gap is a challenge inherent in all applications of virtual machine introspection (VMI). It describes the disconnect between the low-level state that the hypervisor has access to and its semantics within the guest. A common approach to bridge this gap is to utilize the debugging symbols of an inspected operating system kernel, although it is well understood that this information doe...

Runtime Integrity Checking for Exploit Mitigation on Lightweight Embedded Devices

Entering the age of the Internet of things, embedded devices are everywhere. They are built using common hardware such as RISC-based ARM and MIPS platforms, and lightweight open software components. Because of their limited resources, such systems often lack the protection mechanisms that have been introduced to the desktop and server world. In this paper, we present BINtegrity, a novel approac...

Compiled low-level virtual instruction set simulation and profiling for code partitioning and ASIP-synthesis in hardware/software co-design

We present ongoing work and first results in static and detailed quantitative runtime analysis of LLVM byte code for the purpose of automatic procedural level partitioning and cosynthesis of complex software systems. Runtime behaviour is captured by reverse compilation of LLVM bytecode into augmented, self-profiling ANSI-C simulator programs retaining the LLVM instruction level. The actual glob...

Profiling and Tracing in Linux

Profiling and tracing tools can help make application parallelization more effective and identify performance bottlenecks. Profiling presents summary statistics of performance metrics while tracing highlights the temporal aspect of performance variations, showing when and where in the code performance is achieved. A complex challenge is the mapping of performance data gathered during execution ...
