Identifying implicit relationships

relationships J. Chu-Carroll E. W. Brown A. Lally J. W. Murdock Answering natural-language questions may often involve identifying hidden associations and implicit relationships. In some cases, an explicit question is asked by the user to discover some hidden concept related to a set of entities. Answering the explicit question and identifying the implicit entity both require the system to discover the semantically related but hidden concepts in the question. In this paper, we describe a spreading-activation approach to concept expansion, backed by three distinct knowledge resources for measuring semantic relatedness. We discuss how our spreading-activation approach is applied to address these questions, exemplified in Jeopardy!i by questions in the BCOMMON BONDS[ category and by many Final Jeopardy! questions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by measuring its impact on IBM Watsoni performance on these questions.

Identifying a Company's Non-Customer Online Communities: a Proto-typology
This paper describes an exploratory, qualitative study of a process for extracting, identifying and exploiting an enterprise's implicit (less visible) web communities using link analysis. By identifying the implicit communities' relationships to a specific enterprise, the information can be organized into stakeholder groups and used for 'listening' to the external environments. A prototypology ...
متن کاملClustering microarray-derived gene lists through implicit literature relationships
MOTIVATION Microarrays rapidly generate large quantities of gene expression information, but interpreting such data within a biological context is still relatively complex and laborious. New methods that can identify functionally related genes via shared literature concepts will be useful in addressing these needs. RESULTS We have developed a novel method that uses implicit literature relatio...
متن کاملImplicit Causal Models for Genome-wide Association Studies
Progress in probabilistic generative models has accelerated, developing richer models with neural architectures, implicit densities, and with scalable algorithms for their Bayesian inference. However, there has been limited progress in models that capture causal relationships, for example, how individual genetic factors cause major human diseases. In this work, we focus on two challenges in par...
متن کاملAnalysis of Binary/Ternary Cardinality Combinations in Entity-Relationship Modeling
In this paper, we discuss the simultaneous existence, and relationships, between binary and ternary relationships in entity-relationship (ER) modeling. We define the various interpretations that can be applied to the simultaneous existence of ternary and binary relationships having the same participating entities. We have identified that only certain cardinalities are permitted to exist simulta...
متن کاملIdentifying Implicit and Explicit Relationships Through User Activities in Social Media
Social commerce has emerged as a new paradigm of commerce due to the advancement and application of Web 2.0 technologies including social media sites. Social media sites provide a valuable opportunity for social interactions between electronic commerce consumers as well as between consumers and businesses. Although the number of users and interactions is large in social media, the social networ...
