چکیده

The “citric acid cycle” is now regarded as the final common pathway of metabolism serving as the primary route for the oxidation of metabolites. Likewise, the thyroid hormone is considered a major regulatory substance for biological oxidations. It, therefore, seemed logical to study possible quantitative alterations in the cycle acids in experimental hypoand hyperthyroid states. The concentrations of the cycle acids in metabolically active tissues, liver and muscle, were determined in experimental hypoand hyperthyroid and control rats.

The origin of intermediary metabolism.

The core of intermediary metabolism in autotrophs is the citric acid cycle. In a certain group of chemoautotrophs, the reductive citric acid cycle is an engine of synthesis, taking in CO(2) and synthesizing the molecules of the cycle. We have examined the chemistry of a model system of C, H, and O that starts with carbon dioxide and reductants and uses redox couples as the energy source. To inq...

Thyroid Hormone Reverses Aging-Induced Myocardial Fatty Acid Oxidation Defects and Improves the Response to Acutely Increased Afterload

BACKGROUND Subclinical hypothyroidism occurs during aging in humans and mice and may contribute to the development of heart failure. Aging also impairs myocardial fatty acid oxidation, causing increased reliance on flux through pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) to maintain function. We hypothesize that the metabolic changes in aged hearts make them less tolerant to acutely increased work and that th...

Self-organizing biochemical cycles.

I examine the plausibility of theories that postulate the development of complex chemical organization without requiring the replication of genetic polymers such as RNA. One conclusion is that theories that involve the organization of complex, small-molecule metabolic cycles such as the reductive citric acid cycle on mineral surfaces make unreasonable assumptions about the catalytic properties ...

Intermediary metabolism.

Caenorhabditis elegans has orthologs for most of the key enzymes involved in eukaryotic intermediary metabolism, suggesting that the major metabolic pathways are probably present in this species. We discuss how metabolic patterns and activity change as the worm traverses development and ages, or responds to unfavorable external factors, such as temperature extremes or shortages in food or oxyge...

Metabolic patterns for succinate-2-C14 in tissues of tumor-bearing rats.

The present series of experiments are an ex tension of in vivo studies on the metabolism of intermediates of the citric acid cycle and related compounds. In earlier studies it was found that acetate (4, 6, 11) and pyruvate (5) were not actively metabolized by the citric acid cycle in tumors in vivo. Acetate was not activated, and pyruvate was converted largely to lactate. Recent studies have in...
