Towards Efficient Hardware for Spike-processing Neural Networks

چکیده
We present the requirements for a neurocomputer for spike-processing neural networks. In a simulation study we investigated the performance of available hardware and showed, that there is still a need for a specific neurocomputer dedicated to the simulation of spike-processing networks. On the basis of our simulation study and an investigation of the features of spike-processing networks we analyses the requirements for the design of dedicated hardware. An efficient hardware architecture should contain an event-list module, a sender-oriented connection module and a number of fixed-point processing units.

Hardware Requirements for Spike-Processing Neural Networks
Experimental results suggest that the time structure of neuronal spike trains can be relevant in neuronal signal processing. In view of these results, a shift of interest from analog neural networks to spikeprocessing neural networks has been observed. For tasks like image processing the simulation of these networks has to be performed with the speed of biological neural networks. We investigat...
متن کاملA theoretical basis for efficient computations with noisy spiking neurons
Network of neurons in the brain apply – unlike processors in our current generation of computer hardware – an event-based processing strategy, where short pulses (spikes) are emitted sparsely by neurons to signal the occurrence of an event at a particular point in time. Such spike-based computations promise to be substantially more power-efficient than traditional clocked processing schemes. Ho...
متن کاملSTDP Based Pruning of Connections and Weight Quantization in Spiking Neural Networks for Energy Efficient Recognition
Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) with a large number of weights and varied weight distribution can be difficult to implement in emerging in-memory computing hardware due to the limitations on crossbar size (implementing dot product), the constrained number of conductance levels in non-CMOS devices and the power budget. We present a sparse SNN topology where non-critical connections are pruned to ...
متن کاملTo Spike or Not to Spike: That Is the Question
Both the brain and digital computers process information, but they do this in completely different ways. Neurons in the brain transmit information not through bits, but through spikes. Spikes are short voltage increases [see inset in the figure above] that are generated near the cell body of a neuron, with average spike rates below 10 Hz. These spikes are transmitted via fine axonal fibers and ...
متن کاملAn Efficient Hardware Circuit for Spike Sorting Based on Competitive Learning Networks
This study aims to present an effective VLSI circuit for multi-channel spike sorting. The circuit supports the spike detection, feature extraction and classification operations. The detection circuit is implemented in accordance with the nonlinear energy operator algorithm. Both the peak detection and area computation operations are adopted for the realization of the hardware architecture for f...
