چکیده

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is a well-known dual mode bifurcating system that consists of slow and fast modes associated with nystagmus and saccade, respectively. Estimation of continuous-time parameters of nystagmus and saccade models are known to be sensitive to estimation methodology, noise and sampling rate. The stable and accurate estimation of these parameters are critical for accurate disease modelling, clinical diagnosis, robotic control strategies, mission planning for space exploration and pilot safety, etc. This paper presents a novel indirect system identification method for the estimation of continuous-time parameters of VOR employing standardised leastsquares with dual sampling rates in a sparse structure. This approach permits the stable and simultaneous estimation of both nystagmus and saccade data. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated via simulation of a continuoustime model of VOR with typical parameters found in clinical studies and in the presence of output additive noise.

Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex Abnormalities in Posterior Semicircular Canal Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Pilot Study

Introduction: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), involving the semicircular canals, is one of the most common diseases of the inner ear. The video head impulse test (vHIT) is a new test that examines the function of the canals. This study aimed to investigate the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain, gain asymmetry and saccades after stimulating all six canals in patients definitively d...

Violation of homogeneity by the vestibulo-ocular reflex of the goldfish.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) allows animals to maintain stable gaze during head rotations by generating compensatory eye rotations. The VOR is typically tested using sinusoidal head rotation, and VOR gain is calculated as the ratio of the amplitude of eye to head rotational velocity. Through habituation, prolonged exposure to lower frequency sinusoidal head rotation in the dark decreases V...

Age-related changes in human vestibulo-ocular and optokinetic reflexes: pseudorandom rotation tests.

The dynamic response properties of horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and optokinetic reflex (OKR) were characterized in 216 human subjects ranging in age from 7 to 81 y. The object of this cross-sectional study was to determine the effects of aging on VOR and OKR reflex dynamics, and to identify the distributions of parameters that describe VOR and OKR responses to pseudorandom stimuli i...

Artificial Balance: Restoration of the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex in Humans with a Prototype Vestibular Neuroprosthesis

The vestibular system plays a crucial role in the multisensory control of balance. When vestibular function is lost, essential tasks such as postural control, gaze stabilization, and spatial orientation are limited and the quality of life of patients is significantly impaired. Currently, there is no effective treatment for bilateral vestibular deficits. Research efforts both in animals and huma...

Age-related changes in human vestibulo-ocular reflexes: sinusoidal rotation and caloric tests.

The dynamic response properties of horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were characterized in 216 human subjects ranging in age from 7 to 81 y. The effects of aging on VOR dynamics and parameter distributions that describe VOR responses to caloric and to sinusoidal rotational stimuli were determined in a putatively normal population. Caloric test parameters showed no consistent trend with a...
