چکیده

Grazing incidence mirrors for X–ray astronomy are usually designed in the parabola-hyperbola (Wolter I) configuration. This design allows for optimal images on-axis, which however degrade rapidly with the off-axis angle. Mirror surfaces described by polynomia (with terms higher than order two), have been put forward to improve the performances over the field of view. Here we present a refined procedure aimed at optimizing widefield grazing incidence telescopes for X–ray astronomy. We improve the angular resolution over existing (wide-field) designs by ∼ 20%. We further consider the corrections for the different plate scale and focal plane curvature of the mirror shells, which sharpen by another ∼ 20% the image quality. This results in a factor of ∼ 2 reduction in the observing time needed to achieve the same sensitivity over existing wide-field designs and of ∼ 5 over Wolter I telescopes. We demonstrate that such wide-field X–ray telescopes are highly advantageous for deep surveys of

Analytical computation of the off-axis effective area of grazing incidence X-ray mirrors

Aims. Focusing mirrors for X-ray telescopes in grazing incidence, introduced in the 70s, are characterized in terms of their performance by their imaging quality and effective area, which in turn determines their sensitivity. Even though the on-axis effective area is assumed in general to characterize the collecting power of an X-ray optic, the telescope capability of imaging extended X-ray sou...

From x-ray telescopes to neutron focusing

In the case of neutrons the refractive index is slightly less than unity for most elements and their isotopes. Consequently, thermal and cold neutrons can be reflected from smooth surfaces at grazing-incidence angles. Hence, the optical technologies developed for x-ray astronomy can be applied for neutron focusing. The focusing capabilities of grazing incidence neutron imaging optics have been ...

Development of adjustable grazing incidence optics for Generation-X

For X-ray astronomy, 0.1 arc-second imaging resolution will result in a significant advance in our understanding of the Universe. Similarly, the advent of low cost high performance X-ray mirrors will also increase the likelihood of more X-ray telescopes being funded and built. We discuss the development plans of two different types of adjustable grazing incidence optics: one being a tenth arc-s...

Space solar telescope in soft X-ray and EUV band

In this paper we have reviewed our achievements in soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) optics. Up to now, the research system of soft X-ray and EUV optics has been established, including light sources, detectors, calibrations, optical testing and machining of super smooth mirrors, and fabrications of multilayer film mirrors. Based on our achievements, we have developed two types of solar s...
