Ultrafast Optical Pulses
نویسنده
چکیده
Ultrafast pulses on the femtosecond time scale allow fundamental processes, such as atomic transitions, to be measured. To investigate the formation of optical pulses, an argon ion laser was used to pump a titanium-doped sapphire laser. The mode-locked output of this laser was measured with a spectrometer and an autocorrelator to find a frequency pulse width of σω = 86 ± 3 rad/ps and a temporal pulse width of σt = 14 ± 1 fs. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle demands that σωσt ≥ 1, where the minimum uncertainty corresponds to a transformlimited pulse; for this investigation, σωσt = 1.2 ± 0.1, so our pulse was nearly transform-limited. This conclusion is supported by overlaying the measured autocorrelation function with one calculated from the frequency spectrum, assuming a transform-limited Gaussian pulse; the two curves are nearly identical.

Ultrafast optical spin echo for electron spins in semiconductors.
Spin-based quantum computing and magnetic resonance techniques rely on the ability to measure the coherence time T(2) of a spin system. We report on the experimental implementation of all-optical spin echo to determine the T(2) time of a semiconductor electron-spin system. We use three ultrafast optical pulses to rotate spins an arbitrary angle and measure an echo signal as the time between pul...

It is shown that magnetic state decoherence produced by collisions in a thermal vapor can be suppressed by the application of a train of ultrafast optical pulses.
متن کاملUse of the Faraday optical transformer for ultrafast magnetization reversal of nanomagnets
We propose a new strategy for ultrafast magnetization reversal of nanomagnets. Due to the Inverse Faraday Effect, circularly polarized optical pulses induce a pulsed magnetic flux in materials with large magneto-optical susceptibility. Alternatively, intense optical pulses can induce a pulsed magnetic flux by means of ultrafast demagnetization of a metallic thin film or multilayer with a perpen...
متن کاملCross-phase modulation and induced focusing due to optical nonlinearities in optical fibers and bulk materials
Cross-phase modulation (XPM) and induced focusing occur when copropagating ultrafast pulses interact in a nonlinear medium. XPM and induced focusing are investigated as new techniques to control the spectral, temporal, and spatial properties of ultrafast pulses with femtosecond time response. In this paper we review our most recent measurements on (1) induced spectral broadening in BK7 glass, (...

We perform subsurface ablation of atherosclerotic plaque using ultrafast pulses. Excised mouse aortas containing atherosclerotic plaque were ablated with ultrafast near-infrared (NIR) laser pulses. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to observe the ablation result, while the physical damage was inspected in histological sections. We characterize the effects of incident pulse energy on s...
متن کاملUltrafast Optical Heating Induced Polarization-Dependent Optical Switching in Gold Nanowires
Excitation using femtosecond laser pulses induced ultrafast heating of discontinuous gold nanowires, resulting in transient thermal expansion of the gold nanostructures that constitute the nanowires. The cross-plasmon resulting from the closely arranged gold nanostructures along the nanowires was modified by the change in the small gaps due to the thermal effect. This led to the spectral shift ...
