چکیده

The formation of halogenated solvent artifacts was investigated in common analytical solvents exposed to free chlorine, chloramines, and free bromine. Three brominated solvent artifacts [3-bromo-3-methyl-2-butanol (BMB) ,l-bromc-2-methyl-2-propanol, and bromoacetone] were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in methyl tert-butyl ether or pentane exposed to free bromine. These same three compounds have been previouslyreported as new disinfection byproducts in ozonated waters high in bromide. A number of chlorinated artifacts, which were reported as novel chloramination byproducts in another previous study, were also identified in diethyl ether exposed to free chlorine and chloramines. The present study indicated that the formation of halogenated artifacts is common in disinfection byproduct (DBP) analysis. Since the formation of artifacts will limit the quantitative and qualitative analysis of DBPs in unquenched water samples, we suggest four ways to avoid the problems related to these artifacts. We also recommend that further research be carried out to verify the results of those studies where known solvent artifacts are reported as byproducts of drinking water disinfection.

A naphthalimide-based fluorescent sensor for halogenated solvents.

A fluorescent sensor for halogenated solvents termed AMN is reported. AMN shows strong fluorescence in most halogenated solvents (QE > 0.1) but weak fluorescence (QE<0.01) in most non-halogenated solvents. In chlorinated solvents, the fluorescence intensity decreased with the reduction of chlorine content. On the contrary, in brominated solvents the fluorescence intensity increased with the red...

NOx formation in the plasma treatment of halomethanes.

A nonthermal, atmospheric pressure plasma, made-up of a BaTiO3 packed-bed reactor, has been used to study the formation of NOx and N2O during the plasma destruction of a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants, including chlorinated, brominated, fluorinated, and iodinated methane species, in a carrier gas of air. Using the plasma destruction of pure air as a base...

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans: literature review and health assessment.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) and dibenzofurans (PBDFs) occur as trace (ppb) contaminants in brominated flame retardants and are produced during combustion of these chemicals. They are also formed when organics are incinerated in the presence of bromine, e.g., in municipal and industrial incinerators and in internal-combustion engines. Combustion of organics in the presence of both b...

Characteristics of Halogenated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Flue Gas from Waste Incinerators

Introduction Halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread environmental pollutants 1,2 . Chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs) and brominated PAHs (BrPAHs) are structurally similar to other halogenated hydrocarbons such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and biphenyls (PCBs). Although the environmental fates and effects of dioxins have been studied in...

Spectroscopic Study of Charge Transfer Complexes of Dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) with Iodine in Three Chlorinated Solvents

Charge Transfer (CT) complexes formed between dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) as an electron donor with the σ-electron acceptor iodine (I2) in chloroform, dichloromethane, and 1,2-dichloroethane solutions have been studied by different spectroscopic techniques at room temperature. The spectral studies of the complexes were det...
