Multi-scale Geometric Modeling of Ambiguous Shapes with Toleranced Balls and Compoundly Weighted α-shapes

چکیده
Dealing with ambiguous data is a challenge in Science in general and geometry processing in particular. One route of choice to extract information from such data consists of replacing the ambiguous input by a continuum, typically a one-parameter family, so as to mine stable geometric and topological features within this family. This work follows this spirit and introduces a novel framework to handle 3D ambiguous geometric data which are naturally modeled by balls. First, we introduce toleranced balls to model ambiguous geometric objects. A toleranced ball consists of two concentric balls, and interpolating between their radii provides a way to explore a range of possible geometries. We propose to model an ambiguous shape by a collection of toleranced balls, and show that the aforementioned radius interpolation is tantamount to the growth process associated with an additively-multiplicatively weighted Voronoi diagram (also called compoundly weighted or CW). Second and third, we investigate properties of the CW diagram and the associated CW α-complex, which provides a filtration called the λ-complex. Fourth, we sketch a naive algorithm to compute the CW VD. Finally, we use the λ-complex to assess the quality of models of large protein assemblies, as these models inherently feature ambiguities. ∗Conference version: Symposium on Geometry Processing, 2010 1 ha l-0 07 96 07 8, v er si on 1 1 M ar 2 01 3 Author manuscript, published in "Symposium on Geometry Processing 2010 (2010) 1713-1722"

Guaranteed collision detection with toleranced motions
We present a method for guaranteed collision detection with toleranced motions. The basic idea is to consider the motion as a curve in the 12-dimensional space of affine displacements, endowed with an object-oriented Euclidean metric, and cover it with balls. The associated orbits of points, lines, planes and polygons have particularly simple shapes that lend themselves well to exact and fast c...
متن کاملAssessing the Reconstruction of Macro-molecular Assemblies: the Example of the Nuclear Pore Complex
The reconstruction of large protein assemblies is a major challenge due to their plasticity and due to the flexibility of the proteins involved. An emerging trend to cope with these uncertainties consists of performing the reconstruction by integrating experimental data from several sources, a strategy recently used to propose qualitative reconstructions of the Nuclear Pore Complex. Yet, the ab...
متن کاملβ-Shape and β-Complex for the Structure Analysis of Molecules
To understand the structure of molecules, various computational methodologies have been extensively investigated such as the Voronoi diagram of the centers of atoms in molecule and the power diagram for the weighted points where the weights are related to the radii of the atoms. For a more improved efficiency, constructs like an α-shape or a weighted α-shape have been developed and used frequen...
متن کاملConformal Alpha Shape-based Multi-scale Curvature Estimation from Point Clouds
Multi-scale geometrical and topological analyses of point clouds can reveal their rich structures. Because conformal alpha shapes of point clouds are hierarchical shapes under different mesh resolution or internal alpha values, their surface curvature estimations are one of the multi-scale geometrical analyses. We present a robust method for computing surface curvature of conformal alpha shapes...
متن کاملInteractive modeling of complex geometric details based on empirical mode decomposition for multi-scale 3D shapes
In this paper we develop an interactive modeling system for complex geometric details transformation based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) on multi-scale 3D shapes. Given two models, we aim to transfer geometric details fromonemodel to another one in an interactivemanner. Taking full advantages of the multi-scale representation computed via EMD, different-scale geometric details can be tr...
