Wave equation for sound in fluids with vorticity

چکیده
We use Clebsch potentials and an action principle to derive a complete closed system of gauge-invariant equations for sound superposed on a general background flow. Our system reduces to the Unruh [Phys. Rev. Lett. 46 (1981) 1351] and Pierce [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 87 (1990) 2292] wave equations when the flow is irrotational, or slowly varying. We illustrate our formalism by applying it to waves propagating in a uniformly rotating fluid where the sound modes hybridize with inertial waves. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. On the necessity of non-Riemannian acoustic spacetime in fluids with vorticity
The necessity of a newly proposed (PRD 70 (2004) 64004) non-Riemannian acoustic spacetime structure called acoustic torsion of sound wave equation in fluids with vorticity are discussed. It is shown that this structure , although not always necessary is present in fluids with vorticity even when the perturbation is rotational. This can be done by solving the Bergliaffa et al (Physica D (2004)) ...
متن کاملSound Wave Propagation in Viscous Liquid-Filled Non-Rigid Carbon Nanotube with Finite Length
In this paper, numerical results obtained and explained from an exact formula in relation to sound pressure load due to the presence of liquid inside the finite-length non-rigid carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which is coupled with the dynamic equations of motion for the CNT. To demonstrate the accuracy of this work, the obtained formula has been compared to what has been used by other research...
متن کاملApplication of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β Equation of State for Refrigerant Fluids
Herein, the application of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β equation of state (EoS) for 13 refrigerant fluids was investigated. The EoS could predict the saturated liquid densities of these refrigerants over the temperature range of 100-400 K and pressures from zero up to187 MPa with the average absolute deviations of 2.66%. The accuracy of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β EoS in liquid density prediction was al...
متن کاملCompressible Fluids: The discontinuity of the vorticity vector on a shock wave in thermodynamical variables
The discontinuity of the vorticity is written as a function of the vector T grad s, (where T is the temperature and s the specific entropy). The expression is obtained thanks to potential equations and independently of the mass conservation and the equation of momentum balance.
متن کاملViscous potential flow
Potential flows u = ∇φ are solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations for viscous incompressible fluids for which the vorticity is identically zero. The viscous term μ∇u = μ∇∇φ vanishes, but the viscous contribution to the stress in an incompressible fluid (Stokes 1850) does not vanish in general. Here, we show how the viscosity of a viscous fluid in potential flow away from the boundary layers e...
