The variation of the osmotic swelling pressure, shear modulus and mixing pressure is measured when Na+ ions are substituted by different monovalent and multivalent cations. The occu"ence of a reversible volume transition induced by monovalent/divalent cation exchange is discussed. A hierarchy is established in the interaction strength according to the chemical group to which the ions belong. It is shown that a Flory-Huggins type expression provides a satisfactory description of the effect of divalent cations on the osmotic behavior of polyacrylate hydrogels both below and in the vicinity of the volume transition. Analysis of the osmotic data indicates a sharp increase in the third-order interaction parameter upon introduction of divalent cations while the second order interaction parameter

Equilibrium Swelling Study of Cationic Acrylamide-Based Hydrogels: Effect of Synthesis Parameters, and Phase Transition in Polyelectrolyte Solutions

Cationic copolymer gels of acrylamide and [(methacrylamido) Propyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) were synthesized by free radical aqueous solution polymerization. The Taguchi method, a robust experimental design, was employed for the optimization of the synthesis based on the equilibrium swelling capacity of the hydrogels. Based on Taguchi method a standard L16 orthogonal array with fiv...

Salt Effect on Osmotic Pressure of Polyelectrolyte Solutions: Simulation Study

We present results of the hybrid Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations of the osmotic pressure of salt solutions of polyelectrolytes. In our simulations, we used a coarse-grained representation of polyelectrolyte chains, counterions and salt ions. During simulation runs, we alternate Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulation steps. Monte Carlo steps were used to perform small ion excha...

Rodlike Polyelectrolytes in the Presence of Monovalent Salt

We investigate the properties of rigid polyelectrolyte solutions in the presence of monovalent salt. The free energy within the Debye-Hückel-Bjerrum (DHBj) theory (Fisher, M. E.; Levin, Y. Phys. Rev. Lett. 1993, 71, 3826) is constructed. It is found that at thermodynamic equilibrium the polyelectrolyte solution consists of clusters composed of one polyion and various counterions. The distributi...
