چکیده

Aims. We have analysed ground-based multi-colour Strömgren photometry and single-filter photometry from the star tracker on the  satellite of the δ Scuti star ǫ Cephei. Methods. The ground-based data set consists of 16 nights of data collected over 164 days, while the satellite data are nearly continuous coverage of the star during 14 days. The spectral window and noise level of the satellite data are superior to the ground-based data and this data set is used to locate the frequencies. However, we can use the ground-based data to improve the accuracy of the frequencies due to the much longer time baseline. Results. We detect 26 oscillation frequencies in the  data set, but only some of these can be seen clearly in the ground-based data. We have used the multi-colour ground-based photometry to determine amplitude and phase differences in the Strömgren b − y colour and the y filter in an attempt to identify the radial degree of the oscillation frequencies. We conclude that the accuracies of the amplitudes and phases are not sufficient to constrain theoretical models of ǫ Cep. We find no evidence for rotational splitting or the large separation among the frequencies detected in the  data set. Conclusions. To be able to identify oscillation frequencies in δ Scuti stars with the method we have applied, it is crucial to obtain more complete coverage from multi-site campaigns with a long time baseline and in multiple filters. This is important when planning photometric and spectroscopic ground-based support for future satellite missions like  and .

Abundance analysis of prime B-type targets for asteroseismology

Context. The CoRoT satellite is collecting precise time-resolved photometry for tens of asteroseismology targets. To ensure a correct interpretation of the CoRoT data, the atmospheric parameters, chemical compositions, and rotational velocities of the stars must be determined. Aims. The main goal of the ground-based seismology support program for the CoRoT mission was to obtain photometric and ...

Lessons for Asteroseismology from White Dwarf Stars

The interpretation of pulsation data for Sun-like stars is currently facing challenges quite similar to those faced by white dwarf modelers ten years ago. The observational requirements for uninterrupted long-term monitoring are beginning to be satisfied by successful multi-site campaigns and dedicated satellite missions. But exploration of the most important physical parameters in theoretical ...

Prospects for Helio- and Asteroseismology

Major progress has been made in helioand asteroseismology in recent years. In helioseismology, much of the activity has been in local helioseismology. However, the recent revision of solar surface abundances, and the resulting problems in reconciling solar models with the helioseismic inferences, have lead to renewed activity in solar modelling and global helioseismology. Interesting, although ...

Asteroseismology with the WIRE satellite

I give a summary of results from the WIRE satellite, which has been used to observe bright stars from 1999–2000 and 2003–2006. The WIRE targets are monitored for up to five weeks with a duty cycle of 30–40%. The aim has been to characterize the flux variation of stars across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. I present an overview of the results for solar-like stars, δ Scuti stars, giant stars, a...

Asteroseismology and the Solar-Stellar Connection

In March 2009, NASA will launch the Kepler satellite—a mission designed to discover habitable Earth-like planets around distant Sun-like stars. The method that Kepler will use to detect distant worlds will only reveal the size of the planet relative to the size of the host star, so part of the mission is devoted to characterizing other suns using asteroseismology. In this proceedings, I give a ...
