چکیده

Let M be an archimedean quadratic module of real t× t matrix polynomials in n variables, and let S ⊆ R be the set of all points where each element of M is positive semidefinite. Our key finding is a natural bijection between the set of pure states of M and S × P(R). This leads us to conceptual proofs of positivity certificates for matrix polynomials, including the recent seminal result of Hol and Scherer: If a symmetric matrix polynomial is positive definite on S, then it belongs to M . We also discuss what happens for nonsymmetric matrix polynomials or in the absence of the archimedean assumption, and review some of the related classical results. The methods employed are both algebraic and functional analytic.

Algorithmic aspects of sums of Hermitian squares of noncommutative polynomials

This paper presents an algorithm and its implementation in the software package NCSOStools for finding sums of hermitian squares and commutators decompositions for polynomials in noncommuting variables. The algorithm is based on noncommutative analogs of the classical Gram matrix method and the Newton polytope method, which allows us to use semidefinite programming. Throughout the paper several...

Semidefinite Programming and Sums of Hermitian Squares of Noncommutative Polynomials

An algorithm for finding sums of hermitian squares decompositions for polynomials in noncommuting variables is presented. The algorithm is based on the “Newton chip method”, a noncommutative analog of the classical Newton polytope method, and semidefinite programming.

\Positive" Non-Commutative Polynomials are Sums of Squares

Hilbert's 17th problem concerns expressing polynomials on R as a sum of squares. It is well known that many positive polynomials are not sums of squares; see [R00] [deA preprt] for excellent surveys. In this paper we consider symmetric non-commutative polynomials and call one \matrix positive", if whenever matrices of any size are substituted for the variables in the polynomial the matrix value...

Sums of Hermitian Squares and the Bmv Conjecture

We show that all the coefficients of the polynomial tr((A+ tB)) ∈ R[t] are nonnegative whenever m ≤ 13 is a nonnegative integer and A and B are positive semidefinite matrices of the same size. This has previously been known only for m ≤ 7. The validity of the statement for arbitrary m has recently been shown to be equivalent to the Bessis-Moussa-Villani conjecture from theoretical physics. In o...
