چکیده

Most of the traffic in today’s network uses the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) as the transport layer protocol for reliable end-to-end packet delivery. However, TCP considers packet loss to be the result of network congestion which makes it unsuitable for mobile wireless communication, where sporadic and temporary packet losses are usual due to fading, shadowing, hand-off and other radio effects. During the vertical hand-off between different wireless technologies, the problem of end-to-end connection and reliability management for TCP becomes more severe. Intermediate Switching Network (ISN) is an effective framework for vertical handover between the UMTS and the WLAN network. This paper evaluates the performance of TCP over ISN based framework. The proposed scheme uses a cross layer interaction between the data link and the transport layers to estimate TCP retransmit timeout and congestion window during handover. Simulation results establishes effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Seamless Vertical Handover in WiFi and WiMAX Networks using RSS and Motion Detection: An Investigation

In this paper, we propose a decision making algorithm for seamless vertical handover between WiFi hotspots and an overlay WiMAX network. The inputs to the algorithm are the WiFi received signal strength (RSS) and estimated end-to-end TCP handover latency. Simulation of the algorithm using Matlab ® reveals that the distance from the WiFi reception boundary at which handover must be initiated if ...

Measurement and Analysis of TCP-Friendly Rate Control for Vertical Handovers

An intersystem or vertical handover is a key enabling mechanism for next generations of mobile communication systems. A vertical handover can cause an abrupt change of up to two orders of magnitude in link bandwidth and latency. It is hard for end-to-end congestion control to adapt promptly to such changes. This is especially a concern for slowly responsive congestion control algorithms such as...

Evaluating Multipath TCP Resilience against Link Failures

Standard TCP is the de facto reliable transfer protocol for the Internet. It is designed to establish a reliable connection using only a single network interface. However, standard TCP with single interfacing performs poorly due to intermittent node connectivity. This requires the re-establishment of connections as the IP addresses change. Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has emerged to utilize multiple ...

Performance comparison of end-to-end mobility management protocols for TCP

Mobility management for TCP connections has been discussed in literature since last several years. Many mobility management solutions have been proposed including end-to-end solutions and infrastructure dependent solutions. These solutions operate at different layers of TCP/IP protocol stack. End-to-end mobility management solutions have the advantage of not requiring the deployment of addition...

An Efficient TCP with Explicit Handover Notification in Wireless Networks

TCP is a popular internet protocol for reliable end-to-end data delivery, but it cannot be applied to wireless networks in which packet loss may be induced by higher BER or handover than congestion. It assumes that such packet loss is caused by network congestion and initiates congestion control procedures. In this paper, we present a novel protocol using Explicit Handover Notification to impro...
