Treatment Options for Triple-negative Breast Cancers

grade (severity). Identification of molecular markers such as expression of the estrogen (er) and progesterone receptors (pgr) and the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (her2) has offered additional predictive value for the therapeutic assessment of women diagnosed with breast cancer 1–4. More recently, gene expression analysis using dna microarray technology has identified additional breast tumour subtypes that were not apparent using traditional histopathologic methods. Based on gene expression profiles, breast cancer can be classified into 5 main groups 5–8:

Molecular Mechanism and Targeted Therapy Options of Triple-Negative (ER, PgR, HER-2/neu) Breast Cancer: Review
Tripple negative breast cancer (TNBC) accounts for approximately 15% of breast cancers. It is defined by the absence of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER-2 Over expression. Expression of ER, PR and HER-2 plays an important role in therapeutic assessment of patients with breast cancer. TNBC is not one disease, but a family of diseases, some of which are highly aggressiv...
متن کاملBiology, metastatic patterns, and treatment of patients with triple-negative breast cancer.
Of the estimated 1 million cases of breast cancer diagnosed annually worldwide, it is estimated that over 170,000 will harbor the triple-negative (estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor/HER2-negative) phenotype. Most, though not all, triple-negative breast cancers will be basal-like on gene expression micorarrays. The basal-like molecular subtype exhibits a unique molecular profile and set of ...
متن کاملMolecular stratification of triple-negative breast cancers.
Research focused on the analysis and classification of breast tumors, primarily using DNA microarrays and patterns of gene expression, has resulted in distinct tumor subtypes. Although no knowledge of patient survival or outcomes was used to derive these gene descriptions, these different classes based upon patterns of gene expression have important prognostic implications. Predictive markers i...
متن کاملModulation of the BRCA1 Protein and Induction of Apoptosis in Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cell Lines by the Polyphenolic Compound Curcumin
In the current study, we sought to examine the effects of curcumin in a specific type of breast cancer called triple negative breast cancer. These cancers lack expression of the estrogen and progesterone receptors and do not over-express HER2. Current treatment for triple negative breast cancers is limited to cytotoxic chemotherapy, and upon relapse, there are not any therapies currently availa...
متن کاملUpdate on PARP Inhibition for Patients With Triple-Negative Metastatic Breast Cancer
Approximately 15% of breast cancers lack expression of oestrogen receptors (ER), progesterone receptors (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptors (HER2).1 This triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive disease: About 30% of patients will develop metastatic disease, whereby symptomatic visceral and brain metastases are common and the median survival is approximately 13 months...
متن کاملMolecular Characteristics and Metastasis Predictor Genes of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: A Clinical Study of Triple-Negative Breast Carcinomas
BACKGROUND Triple-negative breast cancer is a subtype of breast cancer with aggressive tumor behavior and distinct disease etiology. Due to the lack of an effective targeted medicine, treatment options for triple-negative breast cancer are few and recurrence rates are high. Although various multi-gene prognostic markers have been proposed for the prediction of breast cancer outcome, most of the...
