Field testing of a Prototype Acoustic device for detection of Mediterranean Fruit Flies Flying into a trap
نویسندگان
چکیده
An instrument that identifies Mediterranean fruit flies entering a trap by detecting and discriminating their wingbeat sounds from background noises was developed and tested in an anechoic chamber and in field environments. Although the system works well in the absence of background noise, it has some difficulty identifying the wingbeats in high levels of background noise, and additional versions of the instrument are under development to improve operations in high-noise environments.

Broadcasts of wing-fanning vibrations recorded from calling male Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) increase captures of females in traps.
Female Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), from the sterile-male rearing facility in El Pino, Guatemala, were exposed to broadcasts of wing-fanning vibrations recorded from males engaged in calling behavior to investigate the feasibility of developing a female-selective acoustic trap. The recorded signals had frequent amplitude fluctuations and peak frequencies approximat...
متن کاملAcoustic Trap for Female Mediterranean Fruit Flies
Medflies (Ceratitis capitata) are among the world’s most economically harmful pests. In addition, the costs of worldwide monitoring and control are expensive, exceeding $800 million per year in Israel and the U.S. alone. Efficient traps are vitally important tools for medfly quarantine and pest management activities. They are needed for control as well as early detection, for predicting dispers...

The use of simple and economic traps with long lasting lure dispensers is key for implementation of mass trapping strategies against pestiferous fruit flies. Simplicity, cost, ease of assembly, storage and transportation were considered during evaluation of a folding conical trap for mass trapping the Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens. The application of deltamethrin to the lid of the trap r...
متن کاملField response of Mediterranean fruit flies to ceralure B1 relative to most active isomer and commercial formulation of trimedlure.
In a field test to examine attractancy of Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), relative to release rates, equal moles of racemic ceralure B1 and trimedlure isomer C were compared on cotton wicks. Data were collected at 2, 4, and 7 d. The substrates were analyzed for longevity and overall persistence in the field. Ceralure B1 was equally attractive as trimedlure C for the fir...
متن کاملApplications of acoustics in insect pest management
Acoustic technology has been applied for many years in studies of insect communication and in the monitoring of calling-insect population levels, geographic distributions and species diversity, as well as in the detection of cryptic insects in soil, wood, container crops and stored products. Acoustic devices of various sizes and power levels have been used successfully to trap insect pests that...
