چکیده

INTRODUCTION Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) in football are rare but catastrophic events. The SCI incidence rate in the United States for high school, college, and professional football has been estimated as 0.52, 1.55, and 14 per 100,000 participants, respectively [1]. These injuries are very significant given the enormous economic and societal costs and the vastly diminished quality of life of the injured person. The large majority of these SCIs are a result of tackling, particularly when the head is down, resulting in head-first impacts. These impacts can result in high compressive axial loads being transferred into the cervical spine and can lead to potential vertebral fracture and contusion, or other injury to the spinal cord. In order to address such injuries, our group is developing a helmet [2] to mitigate the potential for spinal and spinal cord injuries, as well as minimize head injury risk, in head-first impacts. In particular, a prototype designed and intended specifically for the football market has recently been developed and dubbed the PNT-Football.

Wearing American Football helmets increases cervicocephalic kinaesthetic awareness in “elite” American Football players but not controls

BACKGROUND While there have been investigations into the reduced neck injury rate of wearing protective helmets, there is little information on its effects on normal kinaesthetic neck function. This study aims to quantify the kinaesthetic and movement effects of the American football helmet. METHODS Fifteen British Collegiate American football players (mean age 22.2, SD 1.9; BMI kg.m(2) 26.3,...

Can helmet design reduce the risk of concussion in football?

Of all sports, football accounts for the highest incidence of concussion in the US due to the large number of athletes participating and the nature of the sport. While there is general agreement that concussion incidence can be reduced through rule changes and teaching proper tackling technique, there remains debate as to whether helmet design may also reduce the incidence of concussion. A retr...

Modified Drop Tower Impact Tests for American Football Helmets.

A modified National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) test method for American football helmet drop impact test standards is presented that would provide better assessment of a helmet's on-field impact performance by including a faceguard on the helmet. In this study, a merger of faceguard and helmet test standards is proposed. The need for a more robust systemati...

Effectiveness of the Football Helmet Assessed by Finite Element Modeling and Impact Testing

Mini-sled impact tests using a Hybrid III head-neck complex with and without a helmet were conducted to contrast resulting head accelerations. Because this experimental configuration includes both the linear and rotational impacts to the head, it represents the real world football impact condition better than drop tests traditionally used to evaluate the protective effect of a helmet. It was fo...

Chapter 2 : Investigation of Effective Mass Differences for Helmet to Helmet Impacts in Football : Role of the Neck and Implications on Injury

The research presented herein is an analysis of acceleration measurements of the head during helmet-helmet impacts, where a player’s helmet impacts another player’s helmet, and with a youth population in football. This research is aimed at advancing current understanding of impact biomechanics for two specialized groups. The first study is an observational analysis focusing on helmet-helmet imp...
