ABSTRACT While scientists continue to debate whether-or-not we have entered the geological era of the anthropocene (Crutzen and Steffen 2003), the challenges that we face as a consequence of our impact on the global ecosystem show no sign of abating. Such complex environmental issues demand input from a range of different discipline areas. Within the framework of the landscape architecture profession, this paper looks at the shifts in the concepts of “landscape” and “green infrastructure” (GI) in the current century. This paper describes a multidisciplinary Irish research project (ECO-Plan research http://www.ecoplanresearch.org/), which seeks to provide an evidence-base for the effective integration of ecosystems services and nature conservation with spatial planning by applying the GI concept as an integrative tool. This project is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s STRIVE programme. Some initial findings from this research are discussed below, with particular attention given to their potential implications for repositioning the landscape architecture profession.

Green Infrastructure
The concept of “Green Infrastructure” (GI) is gaining political momentum and has been rapidly introduced in both planning theory and policy, especially in US and Europe (see Lennon, 2014). Yet, it does not have a single widely recognised or accepted definition (Wright, 2011). The term has been adopted by various disciplines (e.g., land conservation, urban design and landscape architecture), som...
متن کاملUsing the Concepts of Green Infrastructure and Ecosystem Services to Specify Leitbilder for Compact and Green Cities—The Example of the Landscape Plan of Dresden (Germany)
In the light of ongoing global urbanization and the high pace of resource consumption, there is an urgent need to foster compact cities. Currently, however, we lack integrative guidelines on how to manage trade-offs between urban densification and the provision of green space. Against this background, this study applies the concepts of green infrastructure and ecosystem services to develop a gu...

متن کاملCombining the Conservation of Biodiversity with the Provision of Ecosystem Services in Urban Green Infrastructure Planning: Critical Features Arising from a Case Study in the Metropolitan Area of Rome
A large number of green infrastructure (GI) projects have recently been proposed, planned and implemented in European cities following the adoption of the GI strategy by the EU Commission in 2013. Although this policy tool is closely related to biodiversity conservation targets, some doubts have arisen as regards the ability of current urban GI to provide beneficial effects not only for human s...
