Abstract People are able to interact with domain-specific intelligent assistants (IA) via spoken language interfaces to access mobile applications. However, sometimes user goals are complex and may require interactions with multiple applications/domains. However current IAs are limited to specific domains and users have to directly manage execution spanning multiple applications in order to engage in more complex activities. An ideal personal agent would be able to model user intents at different levels (single-domain to cross-domain dialogues). This paper addresses several challenges about hierarchical language understanding in the context of spoken dialogue systems (SDS). Our experiments show that language understanding at different levels allows an agent to actively suggest apps relevant to pursuing particular user goals and reduce the cost of users’ self-management.

NLify: Third-Party Programming Support for Spoken Natural Language Interfaces

This paper presents the design and implementation of a programming system that enables third-party developers to add spoken natural language (SNL) interfaces to mobile applications. Existing systems either restrict SNL capabilities to first-party applications or limit developer-defined spoken interactions to keyphrases rather than broad natural language. An examination of expert workflow reveal...

Natural Language in Four Spatial Interfaces

We describe our experiences building spoken language interfaces to four demonstration applications all involving 2or 3-D spatial displays or gestural interactions: an air combat command and control simulation, an immersive VR tactical scenario viewer, a map-based air strike simulation tool with cartographic database, and a speech/gesture controller for mobile robots.

The Cohort and Speechify Libraries for Rapid Construction of Speech Enabled Applications for Android

Despite the prevalence of libraries that provide speech recognition and text-tospeech synthesis “in the cloud”, it remains difficult for developers to create user-friendly, consistent spoken language interfaces to their mobile applications. In this paper, we present the Speechify / Cohort libraries for rapid speech enabling of Android applications. The Speechify library wraps several publicly a...
