Paradigms and Periphrastic Expression: A Study in Realization-based Lexicalism
نویسندگان
چکیده
Our intention in this paper is to develop an explanatory account of the special characteristics of periphrastic expressions by refining the traditional notion of PARADIGM employed within inferential-realizational approaches to morphology (Anderson 1992, Aronoff 1994, Zwicky 1990, Stump 1993, 2001). Our proposal draws on this notion in order to develop a substantive reconceptualization of the form and function of the lexicon in constraint-based theories of syntax. In particular, we argue that the paradigms defined by a language's morphology sometimes include periphrastic combinations (PERIPHRASES). As we show, this conclusion affords a simple resolution of a number of neglected problems which periphrases pose for theories of syntax; it also necessitates a radical rethinking of the relation between the form and content of syntactic structures. The proposals developed here are intended to be relatively neutral with respect to the choice among alternative lexicalist theories of syntax (including Lexical Functional Grammar, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar, and Construction Grammar); for concreteness, however, we articulate the details of our claims in the terminology of LFG .

Lexicalism, periphrasis and implicative morphology1
Several other chapters in this book analyze grammatical phenomena according to the architectural assumptions and constraint-based representational apparatus of lexicalist theories of grammar; in the present chapter, we ask some fundamental questions concerning what it means for a theory to be lexicalist. While critically assessing some consensus beliefs among lexicalists, this exploration will ...
متن کاملRealizational morphology beyond the lexicon: synthetic and periphrastic verbs in Shona
In this paper, I argue that the choice of a periphrastic over a synthetic verbal form in Shona is a strategy to avoid the realization of specific combinations of morphosyntactic properties by the same word form. I argue that periphrastic forms with -nga are formally equivalent to synthetic forms in the verbal paradigm of Shona, based on the assumption that inflected words are not formed in the ...

Genuine Criticism (GC) is an evaluative expression of annoyance with an attribute in the interlocutor, whose realization may threaten the positive image of both interlocutors. The current study investigates facework and politeness in performing GCsin different contexts and for interlocutors with low social distance and high status in terms of GC realization strategies and mitigation devices tha...
متن کاملThe Construct PREDICATE: Empirical arguments and theoretical status
The past few years have witnessed increased attention within lexicalist frameworks such as Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG) and Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) to the analysis of predicates expressed by syntactically independent pieces. The recognition of such phenomena, primarily represented in the literature by analytic or periphrastic causatives, raises central questions concerni...
متن کاملInflected and periphrastic features: issues of comparison and modelling
In recent years there has been renewed discussion in the linguistic literature of periphrases, that is syntactic constructions that express information similar to that realised by inflection and thus seem to straddle the syntax–morphology divide. Structures like the English perfect or progressive are without doubt composed of more than one syntactic element, but at the same time the information...
